Annexation of Texas – Cause / Effect EFFECT: Mission system declines. Many natives are put in forced labor by Mexicans. CAUSE: Mexico wins independence EFFECT: Trade btw northern provinces of Mexico & the U. S. increased. EFFECT: Settlers from U. S. are invited to help prevent border violations. S. F Austin is most successful land agent. EFFECT: Mexico sealed its borders & heavily taxed U. S. goods. CAUSE: White settlers soon outnumbered Mexicans in Texas. EFFECT: Austin tried to get Santa Anna to give Texas more self-rule. EFFECT: Many settlers brought slaves with them. Slavery was illegal in Mexico.

Annexation of Texas – Texan Independence 1833: S. F. Austin traveled to Mexico City to meet w/ Santa Anna to discuss greater self-government for Texas. He was refused, and Austin was arrested on his way back to Texas on the charge of ‘inciting revolution. ’ Santa Anna revoked local powers in several northern provinces, including Texas. 1835: The Mexican Army 4, 000 strong marched toward San Antonio. The Texans attacked. In retaliation, Santa Anna attacked the Alamo & killed all defenders. Later in March of 1836, Santa Anna’s troops killed 300 rebels at Goliad. April 1836: Led by Sam Houston, the Texans defeated the Mexicans & captured Santa Anna. For his freedom, he signs the Treaty of Velasco - Texas independence. September 1836: Sam Houston is made the first president of Texas. In 1838, Houston invited the U. S. to annex Texas. Most Texans favored, however opinion is divided in U. S. Slavery is issue, as it will tip the balance pro-slavery in the Senate.
