Animal Testing Is the use of animals in experiments that seek to control the variables that affect the behavior or biological system under study.
How did this happen U. S. law has required animal safety testing of drugs and cosmetics since 1938 Congress passed the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act in response to public outcry after several tragic incidents involving untested products We share 95% of our genes with a mouse, making them an effective model for the human body.
Background Early Greek-scientist did experiments on live animals. The number of animals used in tests increased along with the number of tests themselves. Many agencies were created that aimed at stopping animal testing (PETA).
Ethics More than 100 million animals, cats, dogs, primates, rats, and other animals are trapped inside of cages in laboratories waiting to be tested. Some are forced to inhale toxic fumes, others are immobilized in restraint devices for hours, some have holes drilled into their skulls, and others have their skin burned off or their spinal cords crushed. Many experiments tested on animals to cure disease do eventually work, but only on animals. About 70% of the time the treatment tested on the animals does not work on humans.
Dr. Richard Klausner “The history of cancer research has been the history of curing cancer in the mouse. We have cured many mice of cancer for decades and it simply didn’t work on human beings. ” -Dr. Richard Klausner, former director of the US National Cancer Institute
Why it’s harmful Animal experiments are cruel, unreliable, and even dangerous. Causes animals to suffer from drugs that have allergic toxins in them. Many animals are put to death after they are tested on. Animals become blind, lose limbs, and hair. Animals don’t always react to the same drugs and infections that humans do.
Why it’s beneficial ● ● ● Limits the number of humans deaths from testing drugs. Limits the number of effects on humans. Can make a better product. Costs less money to test on animals rather than humans. Drugs that can carry with them any dangers can be caught by testing on animals.
Animal Tests Skin sensitization - rub Skin irritation/ corrosion - rub Eye irritation/ corrosion - eye makeup Acute oral toxicity - facial make up
PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals). Well-known organization whose goal is to stop animal cruelty and animal suffering. “Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way. ”
Cost of animal testing Along with the lives of the animals that are being tested on there is a hefty price tag that comes along with testing animals. They must be housed, fed, and cared for during the treatment process. There is also the price of the actual animal that is being tested on. The US spends roughly 16 Billion dollars annually for animal testing at taxpayers' expense.
What would be the difficulty implementing our new ideas? Men and woman would not have makeup to beautify themselves. People will just have to respect how others look in their own natural skin. All the progression that has been made in the animal testing business and the money already spent.
