Imagine you are a coyote, on the hunt for prey, or food, in your habitat among the oak trees by the American River.

In this game, you will be trying to survive by catching enough prey, or food, in each round.

For this game, you will need: 1. The Resilience Game Chart page OR a piece of paper and pencil 1. A regular 6 -sided dice OR you can use the Dice Roller website

Round 1: All is well Instructions: Roll the dice to start hunting for food. If you roll an odd number (1, 3, or 5) , you catch a rabbit. A rabbit is worth 5 points. If you roll an even number (2, 4, or 6), you catch a quail. A quail is worth 2 points. You need at least 16 points to survive this round.

Roll the dice 6 times for each round. Each time you roll, fill the chart in like this. Round 1 Quail 2+2+2+2=8 Rabbit 5 + 5 = 10 Snake TOTAL Survive or Die? Surviving Coyotes 18 Round 2 Round 3 Round 4

Round 1 is complete! How many points did you get? If you got 16 or more points, write “Survive” in the square next to “Survive or Die. ” If you got less than 16 points, write “Die” in the square next to “Survive or Die. ” How many coyotes survived? Raise your hand if you survived this round.

Round 2: Pollution enters the habitat A large factory has opened near the river in your habitat. The factory has not been following regulations to get rid of its waste chemicals safely. It has begun to leak chemicals into the river. The rabbits drink from this river and are becoming sick and dying because of the chemicals in their drinking water.

In this round, you only catch a rabbit if you roll a 3. If you roll any other number, you catch a quail. A rabbit is still worth 5 points. A quail is worth 2 points. You need 16 points to survive. Roll the die 6 times for this round.

Round 3: Fire! It has been a very dry year in your area. Not much snow or rain fell in the winter, leaving the ground dryer than usual, and there is a build-up of dry brush and trees. One day, a controlled burn gets out of hand sparks jump to a nearby grove of trees. Before you know it, your habitat is on fire! The fire burns down many of the trees and the shrubs and grasses underneath, and forces many animals to run away.

You must now figure out how to survive this environmental change. In the next two rounds, you will try out each of these options: Round 3: You will stay and try to find what you need to survive Round 4: Move to a new location

Round 3: Stay You decide to stay in your current habitat and try to survive. However, because of the fire, quail are harder to find. To adapt, you have begun to eat snakes instead. If you catch enough prey, you can survive. In this round: If you roll a 3, you catch a rabbit. If you roll any other numbers, you catch a snake. Rabbits = 5 points Snakes = 1 point You must get at least 16 points to survive. Roll the dice 6 times.

Round 4: Move to a new location You decide to move further downstream to a new habitat. Your new habitat has prey available but there a number of coyotes who already live there, so the rabbits are quickly disappearing.

In this round: If you roll a 3 ON YOUR FIRST ROLL, you catch a rabbit. If you roll a 4, or a 3 after your first roll, you catch a quail. If you roll any other numbers, you catch a snake. Rabbits = 5 points Quail = 2 points Snakes = 1 point You must get at least 16 points to survive. Roll the dice 6 times.
