CONTEXT Context is always important. We need to consider what was happening in society, politics and economics at the time that the novel was written. This will give us more information about the ‘message’ or intended meaning of the novel. Animal Farm was written during the time of the Russian Revolution. The Russian Revolution was the series of events that led from the overthrow of a monarchy to the beginnings of communism. Animal Farm depicts these events through anthropomorphism.

ACTIVITY 1 “Workers of the world unite; you have nothing to lose but your chains”. Look at the quote above. What are the major ideas expressed by this quote? How do you think it relates to Animal Farm? Research Karl Marx and Marxism and write a brief description of Marx’s ideology. How would you explain his values and beliefs? What was the catalyst for his ideology?
