Animal Diseases Signs, symptoms, treatment and prevention
It is important to recognise signs of disease. Do you know what disease causes these symptoms in the following animals?
To give you a clue, this disease can also be transferred to humans
Have you guessed? The answer is ringworm You can see by the shape of the lesions on the human skin-they are in a ring formation Do you know what causes ringworm? Is it: A) a worm B) a virus C) bacteria D) fungus
Ringworm The lesion caused by this infection resembles a worm in the shape of a ring, hence the name ringworm. It is in fact a fungal infection of the skin. Three different types of fungi can cause ringworm-Microsporum, Trichophyton and Epidermophyton. These fungi can live for extended periods as spores in the soil so animals and humans can contract ringworm after direct contact with soil. It can often be passed from animals to humans -do you know the name for this term?
Zoonotic/Zoonosis This is when a disease is naturally transmitted from a vertebrate animal to humans. Can you think of any other diseases that are transferrable between animals and humans?
Watch the following video clip and list the signs and symptoms of ringworm https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=VJi. LOx. Qa. Wa 0 What types of dogs are more prone to ringworm?
Ringworm is highly contagious Ringworm can be passed from animal to animal or animal to human-this is called direct contact Ringworm can also be passed through contaminated items such as animal bedding, feed bowls, surfaces-this is called indirect contact.
Treatment for ringworm Ringworm is not a serious disease and can easily be treated. On the following slide there are some examples of method’s of treatment including oral medications and topical treatments. Topical treatments were also mentioned in the video clip, can you write a definition for the meaning of topical treatments.
Topical treatment This means on top of the skin-epicutaneous such as shampoo's and creams.
Prevention of ringworm Think of ways that you could prevent your dog or cat from getting ringworm
Prevention of ringworm Regularly clean cat and dog bedding Regularly dispose of hairs from the pet grooming brush Remove skin and hair cells by regular vacuuming of the home Disinfect common areas of the home where pets tend to live. If one animal has ringworm isolate it from others Use gloves to prevent human contraction of the disease
