Anglistics Study Programme v. The classic children’s game is a brilliant example of one-way communication. Write down a message on paper around 3 lines long. Get everyone in-line and whisper the message to the first person who then passes the message to the second person and onto the third and all the way down the line. The receivers can only listen, they cannot ask questions. When it reaches the end the last person gives the message out aloud. The facilitator will read out the original message and compare.

Anglistics Study Programme v. The Telephone Charades Game (also sometimes called “Charades Down the

Anglistics Study Programme v. The Telephone Charades Game (also sometimes called “Charades Down the Line”) is an icebreaker/stationary game that is a hilarious blend of the classic “telephone down the line” and “charades” game. v. Select five to six participants and ask them to leave the room. The audience chooses an action that is specific, silly, and obscure to act out (e. g. “a nerd’s romantic first date”, “washing an elephant”, “going skydiving”, etc. ). v. Once the clue has been decided, bring in all the participants and instruct them to face the right side. The moderator reveals the clue to the first person, who taps the second person on the shoulder and acts out the topic using charades rules (no talking allowed, no noises). The second person then taps the third person and acts out his or her understanding of what was acted out. This continues until it reaches the last person in line, who must guess what the action is. v. This game is funny because the action mutates and changes based upon each person’s interpretation of what is going on, often leading to confusion and silly motions.

Anglistics Study Programme v. This is a speaking activity. It’s based on the concept of speed dating so you will need to organize the seats in 2 rows, with guys on one side and girls on the other. The students must face each other and then one side, clearly state which one, must move along one seat and the students “meet” someone new. Write your characters. v. The students have some basic information and a picture but they must “become” this person and then take it from there. v. There is a “scorecard” to fill in, usually by the girls, as well as questions to stimulate conversation. v. Then at the end, they choose who they liked the most and why. v. Give each pair a few minutes to chat, and then shout “change”. v. There mustn’t be any offensive content. v. The activity works well for the vast majority of classes.
