Anglistics Study Programme 1. Britain is facing further mayhem over the next 48 hours in the wake of Storm Ciara which battered Britain with winds of up to 100 mph causing widespread flooding and travel chaos. 2. Storm Dennis has wreaked havoc on Britain, forcing the cancellation of hundreds of flights and trains, and the deaths of at least two people yesterday. As the so-called bomb cyclone battered the coastline, as much as a month's worth of rainfall was predicted overnight and into Sunday morning in some parts of the UK. 3. Storm Dennis hammered Britain Sunday, bringing a month’s worth of rain in just 48 hours to parts of South Wales, which bore the brunt of the country’s second severe storm inside a week. Rivers across Britain burst their banks and a number of severe flood warnings remained in place as authorities strove to get people to safety and to protect homes and businesses. The Met Office, Britain’s meteorological service said the disruption is set to carry through into Monday. Major incidents have been declared in a number of areas in England Wales as authorities mobilized resources to deal with the impact of the overflowing rivers that have cut off some communities.

Anglistics Study Programme • II DEO TEKST 1 In early 2009 some of the worst bushfires ever recorded raged across the southern Australian state of Victoria. Most of the fires were started by failing (overhead) power lines, although some were thought to have been started deliberately. Temperatures that summer were so high that it proved impossible to extinguish some fires once they had started, as firefighters were unable to get close enough. As a result, damage to property was widespread but, fortunately, there were fewer than 200 fatalities. The fires were eventually all extinguished in March as weather conditions improved.
