GATHERING HYMN Who will save our land people 1. Who will save our land people? Who can rescue us from wrong? We are lost – faint, false and foolish – we have slighted God too long. Save the people, Lord our Saviour, guide us home from country far; Holy Fire, consume our rancours, thy Kingdom come – in Africa. 4
2. Make our land as clean and wholesome as the white of sea-washed sands; stretch our vision vast and boundless as our brown-spread dusty lands. Make our people strong and steadfast as the hills that claw our sky; hear our prayer for land people: ‘God bless Africa, ’ we cry. 5
3. We believe God is our Saviour: Christ enough to heal our land. Use, O Lord, the Church, your servants: we on earth your stretched-out hand. May the Church in loving service, shown to all whose path is rough, give a clear, united witness, and proclaim: `Christ is enough!’ 6
4. Christ enough to break all barriers; Christ enough in peace, in strife; Christ enough to build our nation; Christ enough for death, for life. Christ enough for old and lonely; Christ enough for those who fall; Christ enough to save the sin-sick; Christ enough for one – for all! 7

WORD OF GOD ILIZWI LIKATHIXO WOORD VAN GOD IZWI LIKANKULU Psalms: 94 The Psalm is said antiphonally by whole verse. Psalm 94 (NRSV) God the Avenger of the Righteous 1 O LORD, you God of vengeance, shine forth! 2 Rise up, O judge of the earth; give to the proud what they deserve! 3 O LORD, how long shall the wicked exult? 14
4 They pour out their arrogant words; all the evildoers boast. 5 They crush your people, O LORD, and afflict your heritage. 6 They kill the widow and the stranger, they murder the orphan, 7 and they say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob does not perceive. ” 8 Understand, O dullest of the people; fools, when will you be wise? 9 He who planted the ear, does he not hear? He who formed the eye, does he not see? 15
10 He who disciplines the nations, he who teaches knowledge to humankind, does he not chastise? 11 The LORD knows our thoughts, that they are but an empty breath. 12 Happy are those whom you discipline, O LORD, and whom you teach out of your law, 13 giving them respite from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked. 14 For the LORD will not forsake his people; he will not abandon his heritage; 15 for justice will return to the righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it. 16
16 Who rises up for me against the wicked? Who stands up for me against evildoers? 17 If the LORD had not been my help, my soul would soon have lived in the land of silence. 18 When I thought, “My foot is slipping, ” your steadfast love, O LORD, held me up. 19 When the cares of my heart are many, your consolations cheer my soul. 20 Can wicked rulers be allied with you, those who contrive mischief by statute? 21 They band together against the life of the righteous, and condemn the innocent to death. 17
22 But the LORD has become my stronghold, and my God the rock of my refuge. 23 He will repay them for their iniquity and wipe them out for their wickedness; the LORD our God will wipe them out. Glory to the Heavenly Parent, and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 18
FIRST SCRIPTURE READING Please remain seated Job 25: 1 -6 and Job 27: 1 -6 (NRSV) 25 Then Bildad the Shuhite answered: 2 “Dominion and fear are with God; he makes peace in his high heaven. 3 Is there any number to his armies? Upon whom does his light not arise? 4 How then can a mortal be righteous before God? How can one born of woman be pure? 5 If even the moon is not bright and the stars are not pure in his sight, 6 how much less a mortal, who is a maggot, and a human being, who is a worm!” 19
Job Maintains His Integrity 27 Job again took up his discourse and said: 2 “As God lives, who has taken away my right, and the Almighty, [a] who has made my soul bitter, 3 as long as my breath is in me and the spirit of God is in my nostrils, 4 my lips will not speak falsehood, and my tongue will not utter deceit. 5 Far be it from me to say that you are right; until I die I will not put away my integrity from me. 6 I hold fast my righteousness, and will not let it go; my heart does not reproach me for any of my days. 20

CANTICLE Song of Mary Please stand 1. My soul gives God glory, my heart leaps with joyful praises: God’s mercy and favour has rested on me. The Lord God is almighty; God’s name is for ever holy: God’s mercy and favour has rested on me. By the strength of God’s arm he has scattered the proud and has cast down the mighty but raised high the poor. The hungry are fed but the rich find their hands are empty. For ever and always, God’s promise is sure. 22
2. My soul gives God glory, my heart leaps with joyful praises: God’s mercy and favour has rested on me. God’s kindness is for ever, God’s mercy is everlasting, God’s blessings are sure to the end of all time. To God the almighty, the Son and the Spirit, be glory and honour and praise evermore. The Lord God is almighty; God’s name is for ever holy: God’s mercy and favour has rested on me. 23
SECOND SCRIPTURE READING Please be seated John 10: 31 -42 (NRSV) 31 The Jews took up stones again to stone him. 32 Jesus replied, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these are you going to stone me? ” 33 The Jews answered, “It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you, but for blasphemy, because you, though only a human being, are making yourself God. ” 34 Jesus answered, “Is it not written in your law, ‘I said, you are gods’? 35 If those to whom the word of God came were called ‘gods’—and the scripture cannot be annulled— 36 can you say that the one whom the Father has sanctified and sent into the world is blaspheming because I said, ‘I am God’s Son’? 24
37 If I am not doing the works of my Father, then do not believe me. 38 But if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father. ” 39 Then they tried to arrest him again, but he escaped from their hands. 40 He went away again across the Jordan to the place where John had been baptizing earlier, and he remained there. 41 Many came to him, and they were saying, “John performed no sign, but everything that John said about this man was true. ” 42 And many believed in him there. 25

WE AFFIRM OUR FAITH Please stand Tirechán’s Creed Together let us affirm our faith in the words of Tírechán, seventh-century Irish bishop and biographer of Saint Patrick. Our God is the God of all humans, the God of heaven and earth, the God of sea and rivers, the God of sun and moon, the God of all heavenly bodies, the God of the lofty mountains, the God of the lowly valleys. 27
God is above the heavens; and God is beneath the heavens, Heaven and earth and sea, and everything that is in them, such God has as God’s abode. God inspires all things, gives life to all things, stands above all things, stands beneath all things. God enlightens the light of the sun, strengthens the light of the night and the stars, makes wells in the arid land dry islands in the sea, and God places the stars in the service of the greater lights. 28
God is a Parent and has a Son who is co-eternal with Godself; and similar in all respects to Godself; and neither is the Son younger than the Parent, nor is the Parent older than the Son; and the Holy Spirit breathes in them. And the Parent and the Son and Holy Spirit are inseparable. Amen. 29
PRAYERS Please be seated Let us pray Lord have mercy upon us: Christ have mercy upon us Lord have mercy upon us: 30
Our Heavenly Parent hallowed be your Name Your kingdom come Your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen. 31
Litany of Creation Reader 1: Before there was anything, before there was sky, or earth, or sea, there was God. Reader 2: Well God, who is more awesome than any of us can imagine, decided to make something from all that nothingness. And so the spirit of God hovered over the place where only emptiness and darkness had been, and created light. Light for plants to grow, and animals to hunt by, and people to read by, even though plants and animals and people were still on the drawing board. Congregation: And God/Yahweh took a step back and looked at the light created, and God saw that it was 32 good, very good.
Reader 1: God gave the light a name, “Day. ' And gave the darkness a name, too, “Night. " Reader 2: And the beautiful new sun set, and the beautiful new sun rose, and a day passed, the first day. Reader 1: Then God drew an imaginary line in the air, and told the waters to move above or below it. And the waters moved because they had been ordered by God. Reader 2: Below the line, the waters would become clouds, and rivers, and lakes, and seas of a new planet. Above the line, the waters would become part of the sky. Congregation: And it was so, because God made it so. 33
Reader 1: And God gave the deep, blue sky above a name, "Heaven. " Reader 2: And the beautiful new sun rose, and the new sun set, and another day passed, the second day. Reader 1: Then God looked below, at the planet which God/Yahweh had shaped like a snowball in God’s hands, and all that could be seen was water. Water everywhere. God forced the water from the places that were to be dry land, and the waters stayed back at God’s command, creating giant islands we call continents. As before, God named what God had created and called the dry land "Earth, " and the water, "Seas. " Congregation: And God stepped back and looked at what God had done, and saw that it was good, very good. 34
Reader 2: On the earth, God made the plants and trees grow _ ail kinds and shapes and sizes. And on the apple tree grew apples, and on the orange tree grew oranges, each with its own special seed and fruit, as God had commanded it. Congregation: And God stepped back and looked at all that was growing and bearing fruit, and God saw that it was good, very good. 35
Reader 1: And the new sun rose, and the new sun set, and another day passed, the third day. Reader 2: Then God created light to brighten the darkness, as well. In the black velvet sky he hung the moon, much less bright than the sun, but bright enough that creatures wandering the night, creatures that were still on the drawing board, could see what path to take. Reader 1: Then God formed the stars and, gathering a handful, tossed them far into the darkness that surrounded Earth, and there they stayed, because God had commanded them. God knew that by studying the moon and the stars and their place in the Heavens, God’s creatures would be able to tell the seasons, and find their way when there were only stars to go by. Congregation: And God stepped back and looked at the moon and stars, and God saw that they were good, very good. 36
Reader 2: And the sun set, and the sun rose, and another day passed, the fourth day. Reader 1: Then God filled the empty seas with fish. Big fish and little fish. Fishes with scales and fishes with tails and fishes with scales - every kind of fish you could imagine. Reader 2: The skies God filled with birds - birds with big beaks, and webbed "feet, " and even some parakeets. Congregation: And God stepped back and looked at the fish and the birds God had made, and God saw that it was good, very good. 37
Reader 1: Then God blessed all the winged creatures that flew and all the scaly creatures that swam, and told them to go out and make more birds and fish. And so they did. Reader 2: And the new sun set, and the new sun rose, and another day passed, the fifth day. Reader 1: All that remained was to fill the land with creatures. God created animals of all shapes and sizes to roam the earth- moose and monkeys, pigs and pachyderms, cattle and kittens and lions and tigers and bears, oh my! Some walked on paws, some on hooves, some jumped and some slithered. Congregation: And God stepped back and looked at all the land creatures God had made, and God saw that it 38 was good, very good.
Reader 2: Then God created something that was so very special, God made it to look just like God gave the creature a name and the creature was called "Earth Creature/Human", male and female God created them. Reader 1: God put the woman and the man in charge of everything God had made: the Earth, the plants, the fish. Reader 2: Then God blessed Man and Woman and told them to have many children, and let their children have children, and so on, until their families filled all the Earth, which God had given them for their use. Congregation: And God stepped back and looked at Man and Woman, and everything else that God he had 39 made, and God saw that it was good, very good.
Reader 1: And the new sun set, and the new sun rose, and another day passed, the sixth day. Reader 2: And on the seventh day God, who had created the universe, finished the work and took time to rest. God blessed that day of rest, and made it a holy thing, because it was as special as God. Congregation: And the new sun set, and the new sun rose, the seventh day. 40
Reader 1: This is creation's story, as told in the book of Genesis. But it does not end there. Each day is a new creation, a day to worship our awesome God, who made everything from nothing. . . Reader 2: . . . and who saw that it was good, very good. Congregation: And even today, we God’s image bearers continue to commit ourselves to manage the earth and all God has put under our Stewardship in such a way that it creates sustainable and abundant life. Amen 41
