Andy Walton’s Weekly World Watch February 16 - 22, 2020 “If the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet to warn the people and the sword comes and takes the life of one of them, that man will be taken away because of his sin, but I will hold the watchman accountable for his blood. ” (Ezekiel 33: 6, New International Version) PRESS SPACE BAR TO CONTINUE To skip the introductory slides and go straight to this weeks developments click here.
What is a Weekly World Watch? The idea is simple. It is to look at current events and compare them to events spoken of in the Bible. . I hope to build up a picture of God’s hand working in the affairs of this world. God is bringing about a day when all nations will be gathered to Jerusalem to battle. At that time God will send His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, back to this earth. Jesus will then establish God’s kingdom on earth. This kingdom will last for ever. This is our hope and the reason we watch. The following six themes will appear repeatedly in WWW: • Israel: The continuing conflict in the Middle East and focus on Jerusalem. • Europe: Its developing union, both political and religious. • Russia: Its return to anti-Western ways as Bible prophecy’s “king of the north. ” • The UK and the US: Bible prophecy’s “king of the south. ” • Moral standards in decline and violence on the increase. • Increasing natural disasters: including earthquake, famine etc WWW presentations in Power. Point can be ordered as audio/visual CDs by clicking here. Move your mouse to place the cursor on the blue link and click.
What is in a Weekly World Watch? Each WWW looks at a few key developments that have happened during the past week. It is in no way meant to be exhaustive – just a look at those events I saw as significant from a Biblical point of view. Every WWW event slide has the following format. To reveal each block of text just left click your mouse or press the space bar. You control when it appears. HEADLINE This is straight from a news report that caught my eye because it looked significant from a Biblical perspective, usually that of prophecy. The source of the headline and the date are included. EVENT News Photo This is the reporter’s description of the event. It is always a direct quotation from the news report and reflects the understanding of the reporter and editors. This is my comment on why the event is interesting to a Bible student. COMMENT The intention of the WWW is to offer brief Biblical perspectives without going into detail. If more detail is desired, please e-mail me: ([email protected] co. uk). Please note that these are personal thoughts and the aim is purely to stimulate Bible study. This is normally one verse which backs up why the event that has occurred BIBLE is interesting from a Biblical perspective. Please read in its context. QUOTE Unless stated otherwise, all quotes are from the King James Version. (Book, chapter, and verse)

Jordan condemns Israeli Western Wall railway plan BBC, February 18, 2020 EVENT Jordan has condemned a decision by Israel to advance a plan to build a railway line and station underneath the heart of Jerusalem's Old City. The Israeli transport ministry said on Monday that a new route had been approved for an extension of the Tel Aviv. Jerusalem high-speed railway. A 3 km (2 -mile) tunnel will lead to the Western Wall - one of Judaism's holiest sites - in the city's occupied east. Jordan called the move a "flagrant violation of international law". Foreign ministry spokesman Daifallah al. Fayez urged the international community to "assume its responsibilities to resist the illegitimate and illegal Israeli steps". Jordan has special responsibility for overseeing the Muslim holy sites in Jerusalem - including the compound behind the Western Wall, known to Muslims as al-Haram al-Sharif (the Noble Sanctuary) and to Jews as the Temple Mount - via an Islamic trust called the Waqf. COMMENT Israel plans to extend the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem high-speed line to the Western Wall, which attracts millions of visitors and worshippers a year. The new station underneath the Old City will be named after US President Donald Trump, who as we know recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital last year. Jordan opposes Israeli development in Jerusalem’s Old City. The Jordanian monarchy is seen by both Israelis and Palestinians as the “custodian” of the city’s Muslim holy sites, and has long opposed Israel’s construction and infrastructure projects in and around Temple Mount. In Bible terms Jordan covers the area of ancient Edom and Moab. Both tribes are mentioned in Psalm 83 as being confederate against Israel in the last days and join an alliance of nearby peoples who try to bring Israel to an end. We see Jordan in that role now. BIBLE QUOTE They have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance. For they have consulted together with one consent: they are confederate against thee: The tabernacles of Edom, and the Ishmaelites; of Moab, and the Hagarenes; (Psalm 83: 4 -6)
UN warns of 'bloodbath' as Syria fighting escalates Aljazeera, February 21, 2020 EVENT The United Nations warned on Friday that escalating fighting in northwest Syria could end in a "bloodbath" as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan phoned Russia's leader to discuss the quickly deteriorating situation. The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin and Erdogan agreed to intensify talks on Syria's Idlib region to reduce tensions and implement a ceasefire. Putin told Erdogan he was "seriously concerned" by the "aggressive actions" of rebels in Idlib. "The necessity of unconditional respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria was underlined, " the Kremlin statement said. Erdogan told Putin the solution was to return to the Sochi agreement they signed in 2018, which allowed Turkey to establish military posts across Idlib designed to prevent a Syrian government assault. That deal has been increasingly set aside as Syrian forces advance steadily into the region. COMMENT Idlib is the final stronghold of rebels fighting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government during a nine-year war that has killed hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions. Turkey did a deal with Russia in 2018 that allowed Turkey to have military posts around Idlib to prevent more Syrian refugees entering Turkey backs the rebel groups in this area but has lost 16 military personal this month in helping them. On Friday Ankara threatened imminent military invasion of Syria to prevent further losses. This is causing friction with Russia who is backing the Syrian regime. There is a possibility that the Syria internal war becomes a war between nations. We know total destruction of Damascus is coming – this could be the next step. BIBLE QUOTE The burden of Damascus. Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap. The cities of Aroer are forsaken: they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid. The cities of Aroer are in Jordan – see previous slide (Isaiah 17: 1 -2)
Russia Boosts Its Military Contingent in Georgia’s Occupied Territories The Jamestown Foundation, February 21, 2020 EVENT In the north-western Syrian province of Idlib, the Russian Armed Forces—mainly via their “proxy, ” Bashar al-Assad’s Syrian Arab Army—are confronting Turkish military units putting severe strains on the Moscow-Ankara relationship. But Russian military activities along Turkey’s borders are not limited to Syria. Notably, Russia has in recent weeks been bolstering its military contingents in the neighbouring South Caucasus region—not only in the occupied territories of Georgia, but also in Armenia. Russia’s moves to strengthen its illegal military bases in Georgia’s occupied regions, the deployments of new weapons and military personnel there, as well as intensive military training “should be seen as part of the Kremlin’s revisionist policies. ” Akubardia noted, “Moscow views Georgia as part of its own ‘zone of privileged interests. ’ ” COMMENT Georgia is in the Caucasus region on Russia’s southern border. When Russia descends on Israel it will have to come through this area if it is to move its troops and tanks. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Georgia became an independent nation but Moscow doesn’t see it that way. It wants Georgia under its control. However Georgia has applied to become a member of NATO! Russia totally opposes this and in 2008 Russia invaded Georgia. But it appears Moscow is on the move again with a bolstering of its military in this area. Also this week the UK and US said that they believe that cyber attacks 3 months ago on Georgia were perpetrated by the Sandworm team, a unit operated by Russia’s military intelligence service. Fighting this week also broke out in Ukraine with heavy shelling by Russian backed rebels killing and wounding several Ukrainian soldiers. Russia it appears is pushing at its borders… BIBLE QUOTE And say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal: And I will turn thee back, and put hooks into thy jaws, and I will bring thee forth, and all thine army, horses and horsemen, all of them clothed with all sorts of armour, even a great company with bucklers and shields, all of them handling swords: (Ezekiel 38: 3 -4)
EU summit collapses as leaders struggle to fill € 75 bn Brexit hole The Guardian, February 21, 2020 EVENT A summit of EU leaders seeking to fill a € 75 bn hole in the bloc’s budget left by Brexit dramatically collapsed after Angela Merkel led major contributors in rejecting a proposal that would have left them paying billions more. The meeting in Brussels was brought to an abrupt end on Friday evening with the leaders deeply divided, leaving the European council president, Charles Michel, to admit: “We need more time. ” The UK’s departure has left EU states struggling to fund plans over the next seven years to tackle the climate emergency, aid poorer regions and continue to subsidise farmers through the common agricultural policy. The 27 heads of state and government must agree on a budget for the next seven years, and the European parliament must give its endorsement, before the end of 2020, to avoid the EU’s spending programmes grinding to a halt. “We are super, super late, ” admitted one EU official. COMMENT The 27 nations left in the EU now have to plug an enormous hole left by Britain’s exit from the bloc. The UK made a very large contribution into EU coffers and to keep the machine going that money still needs to be found. The trouble is who will pay it? This is just the start of the true impact of Brexit being felt – both for the UK and the EU. The standoff this week has exposed rifts between countries in the north and south, between east and west, and between more developed and less advanced economies. The Bible is clear that Christ returns when there is division Europe. With iron and clay not mixing. In other words the iron power of ancient Roman Empire does not mix with people power (clay). But when Christ has returned a resurrected Holy Roman Empire makes war against Christ and the saints. This must be after Christ has returned… BIBLE QUOTE And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast. These have one mind, and shall give their power and strength unto the beast. These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: (Revelaiton 17: 12 -14)
South Korean 'Cult' at Centre of Local Coronavirus Outbreak Time, February 20, 2020 EVENT COMMENT BIBLE QUOTE A mysterious religious group described by the government of South Korea as a “cult” has emerged as a hotbed of new coronavirus cases, according to official statistics. At least 33 of South Korea’s 104 confirmed cases as of Feb. 20 are linked to the Shincheonji sect, which is also known as “Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony. ” The group, an offshoot of Christianity, was founded in 1984 by a man claiming to be a prophet sent by Jesus Christ. It reportedly has more than 120, 000 followers worldwide. Its adherents believe the religion is the one true version of Christianity, and that they will be the only ones to achieve salvation when judgement day arrives, according to its scripture. Relatives of adherents to the sect have said in media reports that they have been cut off from contacting family members. A pseudo Christian religion in South Korea has become a new epicentre for the Coronavirus. They are called ”The Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony. ” The organisation is led by Lee Man-hee. They are taught he Lee has donned the mantle of Jesus Christ. He is Christ councillor here on earth. Lee is known as the pastor of Shincheonji Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony and is creating God’s kingdom of heaven here on earth. The group is made up of 12 tribes. They are the new spiritual tribes working to announce the kingdom and heal all nations simultaneously. Interesting then his group has become the epicentre in South Korea of the Coronavirus. Jesus said that before he returned there would be false prophets and even those who declare to be Christ. It’s yet another sign of the times. Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: (Matthew 24: 23 -26)
Locust Swarms Ravaging East Africa Are the Size of Cities Bloomberg, February 18, 2020 EVENT The United Nations has warned of an unprecedented threat to food security in a part of the world where millions already face hunger. And the situation will probably get worse before it gets better. Experts say the outbreak—the worst in recent memory—is caused by an increased number of cyclones. If the weather trends continue, there may be more to come. “There is a link between climate change and the unprecedented locust crisis plaguing Ethiopia and East Africa, ” UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said. “Warmer seas mean more cyclones generating the perfect breeding ground for locusts. Today the swarms are as big as major cities and it is getting worse by the day. ” The number of locusts in East Africa could expand 500 times by June, the UN's Food & Agriculture Organization said last month. The region gets heavy seasonal rains—and great locust-breeding and swarming conditions—from March through May. Last year, the October-to-December rainy season was among the wettest in 40 years, with cumulative rainfall ranging from 120% to 400% of normal. COMMENT We talk about the “signs of the times” – but surely we are living in the “time of the signs”. There are so many incredible signs happening around the world on a daily basis we can surely see the world heading towards final judgement when Christ returns. Some of the signs are caused by the vast increase in population numbers. This is precisely what happened at the time of Noah – men multiplied on the earth. Jesus said this would happen again at the time he would return. The huge increase of people and their associated corruption has led to the destabilising of the world’s ecosystems – changing the delicate balance God put in place. The return of Jesus must be close…. BIBLE QUOTE Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: And great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven. (Luke 21: 10 -11)
