Andrew Goodwin Gender: Through out the music video we see women for the majority of the time. In fact, if we do see men however we usually see them in the background. This shows that there is no patriarchy as women are in power and the focal point of the music video, this amplifies Beyoncé's message of the fact that women of colour should take pride in themselves

Moreover, we see that women in the music video have power. We see that throughout the video Beyoncé and her dancers wear a antebellum costume type. This was worn by women in 19 th century who were rich and was seen to be ‘high’ in society. Furthermore, we see that women are empowered because through put the music video they can be seen to be provocative and this could be due to their dance and or what they are wearing. Notion of looking In the music video there are shots where we see Beyoncé looking straight into the camera. However, it counteracts theory because it’s not being done to appeal male audiences and seduce them but more to amplify Beyoncé's message that women can wear and do whatever without being sexualised. In fact it comes across as being powerful.
