Ancient Olympic Games • Ancient Olympic Games were the most important event of all Greece. They were series of sports competitions whick were held in Olympia every four years. They started at 776 b. c and athletes from all Greece took place and later from other places. Each city was sending athletes to the Olympic Games and gradually acquired great prestige. During the Olympic Games there were no battles. The event was going on every four years until 393 b. c when the emperor Theodosios forbid the conduct of the Olympic Games. But in 1896 the Olympic Games started again, but they were international that time.

PANKRATION • Pankration was a sport which was included in the Olympic Games in 648. Pankration seems like Box or Wrestling. The only things that aren’t allowed is bitting the other athlete. The term comes from the Greek word παγκρατιον. The Pankration was invented from Heracles and Theseus according to the Greek mythology. They invented Panklration as a result of boxing and wrestling. Pankration could be characterised as a martial art. Famous athletes of Pankration are Dorieus from Rodos, Theagenis from Thassos and Lygdamis from Syracuse.

At the time of the Roman Empire, boxing became a bloody sport, the equipment that the athletes used was gloves equiped with molybdnum spikes. After the fall of the Roman Empire the sport of boxing lost its glory and from then, there wasn’t a lot of interest in competitions.

RACES • The races were the first sport ever established. By the fifteen Olympic Games the athletes used to wear a small apron while later, they used to compete naked. The distance they had to run was approximately 192 meters. The athletes competed in groups of four and the winners competed in groups of four too. In other types of races, the athletes used to run 384 meters, 2 stadiums and even 24 stadiums.

CHARIOT RACES • Chariot races were held in a special stadium called hippodrome. The only hippodrome rescued today in Greece is in mount Lykaio which is 300 meters long and 100 meters wide. The starting device was invented by Klioita and was perfected by Arisiteidis. At the end of the hippodrome there was the altar of Taraxippus, because the horses were unexpectedly panicked when they passed by it.

PENTATHLON • The Pentathlon consists of five sports: race, jumping, wrestling, discus and javelin.

PENTATHLON • The Pentathlon consists of five sports: race, jumping, wrestling, discus and javelin. The Pentathlon started with discus or jumping, and continued with javelin, race and wrestling. The athletes had to land upright and still on the point of contact with the ground. The discus evolved from the stone throwing in battle and was firstly held with big stones. The javelin was also inspired by the respective weapon, but it was shorter, thinner and lighter.
