Archaic Period There are three main periods. From (800 -480 BC) Archaic Period – During this period the Greek government began to form with the rise of the city-states such as Athens and Sparta. 776 BC - The first Olympic Games took place 650 BC- The Greek Tyrants come to power. Cypselus is the first Tyrant in Corinth 600 BC- The first Greek coin was introduced. The Drachma, which weighted about 22 grains. 508 BC – Democracy was introduced to Athens by Cliesthenes, he established a constitution and often called the “ Father of Athenian Democracy”. This is one of the great accomplishments of the Greek culture.

Classical Period From (480 - 323 BC) Classic Period- began the introduction of democracy

Classical Period From (480 - 323 BC) Classic Period- began the introduction of democracy in Athens. Arising to new heights in art and philosophy. It was during this period that Athens and Sparta fought in the Peloponnesian war. Near the end of this period, Alexander the Great rose to power and conquering most of Europe and Western Asia. 490 BC- Greeks and the Persians fight in the Persian Wars. Two famous battles are the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC and the Battle of Samalis 480 BC 431 BC – The war between Sparta and Athens begin. They are called the Peloponnesian Wars. This would last for 27 years, which Sparta eventually conquering Athens in 404 BC. 342 BC – Philosopher Aristotle began to tutor Alexander, later to be called Alexander the Great.

Hellenistic Period From (323 -146 BC) Hellenistic Period – Alexander’s death ushered this period.

Hellenistic Period From (323 -146 BC) Hellenistic Period – Alexander’s death ushered this period. Greece declined in power until it was finally conquered by Rome. 323 BC- This period begins with Alexanders death. The ancient Greek civilization began to decline and the ancient romans begin to gain power. 146 BC- Rome conquers Greece making it apart of the Roman Empire.
