GREECE �Greeks considered themselves civilized, and the rest of the world as barbaric. �Developed a rich mythology based on tales about gods and goddesses. �These gods lived on Mount Olympus but visited earth, interfering and interacting with mortals. �These stories formed the basis of Greek literature and drama.
ART OF ANCIENT GREECE �IDEAL BEAUTY- youth, strength, grace �More lifelike, or naturalistic than previous cultures �Greek sculptures and paintings were based on a study of the human body- especially the nude male athlete. �Greeks exercised and competed naked �Found nothing shocking about seeing people unclothed �Nudity was associated with both heroism and divinity.

ROME �Roman empire covered much of the world. �Because of “Pax Romanus” (Roman peace) it was possible for Roman citizens to travel safely anywhere in the Roman empire. �Because of this Roman art and architecture was highly influence by other civilizations, especially the Greeks.
LACOON is an example of Greek influence.
Roman’s however went beyond the Greek “post and lintel” and developed the rounded arch to create The Colosseum.
Interesting facts about the Colosseum: �Held up to 50 thousand spectators! �Almost 13 stories high! �Opened in 80 AD, 1000’s did a mock battle. �As many as 5000 animals might be slaughtered in a single day for sport. � Animals could be raised by an elevator from the holding area below. �Has Doric, Ionic and Corinthian columns in the design. �It still stands today.
Roman’s also created paintings of stones called mosaics.
