ANCIENT EGYPTIAN CLOTHING/DRESS By: Berenice Urbina-Maturino

Did wealthy people dress differently than poor people? � � Whether royalty or commoner, an Egyptian’s basic dress was based on the country’s climate and the kinds of materials that could be used to make clothes. The clothing people wore was made out of linen. Both men and women wore skirts called kilts, and children usually didn’t wear clothes at all in the warm weather. Wealthy women sometimes wore beaded dresses, and wealthy men often wore decorative robes.

Why did Egyptian people dress the way they did? The kind of climate in Egypt calls for basically light clothing, topped with something warmer at night, especially during the coolest times of the year. Both men and women wore long, flowing dresses, but men also sometimes wore loincloths or short kilt-like skirts and no shirts.

Was there a certain dress code that people had to follow? No. Wearing the right clothes was a big part of keeping cool. While children tended to be nude until they became teenagers, adults usually wore linen clothes, which were made from the fibers of flax plants that grew in the area. To check their look, Egyptians used large pieces of highly polished metal as mirrors. This way they could ensure they put on their makeup and clothes the way they planned.
