Hieroglyphs were the type of writing created and used by ancient Egyptians. It consisted of many different pictures. Hieroglyphs were found inside pyramids and written all over walls of tombs. The only problem with this curious alphabet was that no one could understand what it said until 1799.
More about hieroglyphs In 1799 the Rosetta Stone was found. The stone was found by French soldiers digging a fort in a small village called Rosetta in Egypt. The Rosetta Stone is a slab of granodiorite with 3 different languages on. Greek , Egyptian Hieroglyph and Egyptian Demotic. The Egyptologists studying the stone already knew the Greek language so they used that knowledge to work out what the rest of the Rosetta Stone said.
Ancient Egyptian Rulers In Ancient Egypt their rulers were called pharaohs. One of the most well known pharaohs was Tutankhamun who became king when he was only nine. He ruled Egypt for 10 years until he died in 1323 BC. Tutankhamun’s pyramid/tomb was discovered by Howard Carter in 1922. The last ruler of Egypt was Cleopatra VII.
The River Nile The river Nile is the only water source in hot and dry Egypt. The Nile is the longest river in the world. It flows over 6000 km to the Mediterranean Sea. Ancient Egyptians found this useful for everyday things like washing , drinking and cleaning. Ancient Egyptians used manual water pump called a shaduf and wooden water wheels to transport water to help with growing crops.
