ANATOMY OF DICOT AND MONOCOT LEAF
ANATOMY OF DICOT/ DORSIVENTRAL LEAF EPIDERMIS: Covers both the upper surface (ADAXIAL EPIDERMIS) and lower surface (ABAXIAL EPIDERMIS) Abaxial epidermis has a conspicuous cuticle. Abaxial epidermis has more stomata than the adaxial epidermis.
T. S. OF DICOT LEAF
MESOPHYLL The tissue enclosed by two epidermal layer is called mesophyll. Mesophyll consist of two types of cells: PALISADE PARENCHYMA: Elongated cells arranged compactly in rows or stacks , below adaxial epidermis. SPONGY PARECHYMA: Irregularly arranged cells , with large intercellular spaces.
VASCULAR BUNDLE Represents the midrib and other veins. Xylem is towards the adaxial side and the phloem is towards the abaxial side. Vascular bundle is surrounded by a layer of thick –walled bundle sheath cells.
ANATOMY OF MONOCOTYLEDONOUS/ ISOBILATERAL LEAF The upper and lower surfaces are covered by single –layered epidermis. The upper or adaxial epidermis has some cells larger than the others; such large cells are called bulliform cells. They play an important role in the rolling of leaves. Stomata found on both adaxial and abaxial epidermal layers.
MESOPHYLL Mesophyll not differentiated into palisade and spongy parenchyma. Cells are isodiametric and are arranged compactly. Contain numerous chloroplast
VASCULAR BUNDLE Since monocot leaves have parallel venation , a number of vascular bundle can be seen in a row of almost same size. Vascular bundle has sclerenchyma cells on its upper and lower edges. Xylem is on upper side and phloem on the lower side. There is a parenchymatous bundle sheath , which often contains chloroplast and carries photosynthesis.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DICOT AND MONOCOT LEAF DICOT LEAF MONOCOT LEAF Mesophyll differentiated into palisade and spongy parenchyma. Not differentiated. Bulliform cell are absent. Bulliform cells are present. Hypodermis of mid –rib is collenchymatous. Hypodermis of mid-rib region sclerenchymatous. Stomata are absent or less abundant on the upper side. Stomata equally distributed on both sides. Bundle sheath is single layered and formed of colourless cells. Bundle sheath may be single or double layered.
