• Throughout history there have been plenty of examples of anarchy. Whether it be during a revolution, in times of political transition or societal upheaval - history has seen its share of anarchy! • Examine the following pictures…consider what conditions are evident, what types of people are involved, the historical consequences and overall atmosphere present when anarchy is taking place.
WHAT IS ANARCHY? • Anarchy comes from the greek word ¨anachia¨ which means a lack of authority. • Anarchy is the government of having no government. • The symbol of anarchism has become very famous in popular culture. The ¨A¨ stands for authority and the ¨O¨ stands for order. Together they mean ´anarchy is the mother of all order´.

SOMALIA THE NATION IN ANARCHY • In 1991, the Somali government was overthrown. For the next 15 years there was no governement at all. No president, no schools, no police, no hospitals! • Warlords would fight for control of the country. THE OTHER FACE OF ANARCHY • In many ways, Anarchy is the oldest form of government in human history. • Human beings have survived without formal governments for the vast majority of our existence. • We tend to think of Anarchism as complete chaos and destruction in the streets, but really, anarchism has typically meant the peaceful coexistence and cooperation of societies, societies in which people had to depend on one another to survive hardships.
