Political Cartoons �Political cartoons have been around in some form for many years. �They most often appear in newspapers and magazines. �They have and continue to be a valuable daily source of satire. �They have the power to be moving, concise, revolutionary, among many other things.

Features of Political Cartoons �A cartoon that relates to political decisions, events or ideas. �An art form that makes people think about different perspectives. �A way of expressing freedom of speech. �Exaggerated artwork (physical features and expressions, scale, etc)

Characteristics of Political Cartoons 1. Symbolism (Cartoonists use simple objects, or symbols, to stand for larger concepts or ideas. ) 2. Exaggeration (Sometimes cartoonists overdo, or exaggerate, the physical characteristics of people or things in order to make a point. ) 3. Labeling (Cartoonists often label objects or people to make it clear exactly what they stand for. ) 4. Irony (Is the difference between the ways things are and the way things should be, or the way things are expected to be. ) 4
