GEORGE WASHINGTON’S WARNING • Warns against the party system – “It (parties) agitates (stirs up) the community with illfounded jealousies and false alarms; kindles the animosity (anger) of one. . . against another. . it opens the door to foreign influence & corruption” • The seeds of political parties began to fester during his Administration between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton • Hamilton was a “Federalist” and Jefferson was a “Democratic. Republican” • Also, Washington’s Vice-President John Adams, was a “Federalist”
WASHINGTON’S RETIREMENT • George Washington decides not to seek a third term in 1796. • The battle to become the second U. S. President ensues between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson. Adams defeats Jefferson by 3 electoral votes. • Adams becomes the first and only Federalist President • Problem: Jefferson becomes Vice-President, because initially, whoever finished 2 nd in the Electoral College became VP!

WRITTEN RESPONSE • The two dominant political parties in the United States today are the Democrats and the Republicans. After examining the views of the Federalists and the Democratic. Republicans, which of the two “older” political parties is more like the contemporary Democratic Party, and which one resembles the modern day Republican Party. LOUISIANA PURCHASE SUMMARY • Thomas Jefferson was the 3 rd US President. He served as president from 1801 -1809. It was a time of exploration and trade. Fulton's Steamboat made its first trip on the Hudson River. Louis and Clark left on a voyage of exploration from St Louis toward the Pacific Ocean.
LOUISIANA PURCHASE SUMMARY • At this time in history, France owned the port of New Orleans. Napoleon decided to block the US from using the French port. He knew the United States needed access to a big port for shipping and trade. And Napoleon needed money. England France were at war. Napoleon needed a big chunk of money fast to fight the war.
LOUISIANA PURCHASE SUMMARY • As Napoleon expected, President Jefferson sent a representative to France to attempt to buy a piece of New Orleans. Instead, the United States government was able to buy much more land than they had expected, and for very little money per acre. • In 1803, the United States bought 500, 000 acres of land at approximately 3 cents an acre! That piece of land was known as the Louisiana Purchase. The land purchased included the entire city of New Orleans.
LOUISIANA PURCHASE SUMMARY • With this one purchase, Napoleon gained the money he needed to fight a war with England, and the United States gained enough land to double in size. Even today, the Louisiana Purchase (in 1803) still ranks as one of the best real estate deals in history.
