Analysis of Soundtracks By Ben Evans
Differences: diegetic and Non-Diegetic sounds are what the characters can hear along with the audience. Examples of diegetic sounds in TV and Film are things such as… Character’s dialogue what character say to each over and anything they say aloud to themselves counts as dialogue and is then considered to be diegetic. Ambience sound Everything in the background that makes sound that the character would be able to hear counts as ambience sound from footsteps to bird song. Non-diegetic sounds cannot be heard by characters but can be heard by the audience. Examples of non-diegetic sounds in TV and Film are things such as. . . Voice overs A good example is the voice over in Desperate Housewifes thats done by a dead former resident that dies in the first episode but continues to narrate afterwards Music In action sequences particularly in post production they will add music over it to make it more dramatic and build adrenaline.

The Matrix- Bullet time https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=KNr. SNca. Yi. Zg The Mood for the start is quite serious in the room with the agents and quite reflect that it inportain part and the audience should pay attention to them. At the same time Neo and Trinity are in the elevator getting ready to put their plan into action and it builds up on to the revel of the contents of the duffle bag being a bomb. As they are enact their plan and the bomb goes of the mood changes and goes into slow motion to prepare for things to kick off the slow faced goes back in to real time and there a cut to the room with the agent responds to the attack. it goes back to Neo and Trinity now on the rooftop and non diegetic action music begins to fit watches on screen with what's happening as they both fight of security and when agent smith morfes in to the pilot again the soundtrack reflect by dying down being more calm as you continue to hear the bullets and chaos in the background and the screaming of the pilot with the digital morphing sound that reminds you it sci fi and almost prepare you for the next scene that non realist as Neo unloads dual pistols at agent smith and he dodges them all in real time. when Neo runs out of bullets agent smith returns fire and Neo does the same but we see it in slow motion and the audio slows down with the action but as he gets hit it breaks back in to real time for his reaction and agents smiths dialogue with him the tension rises the with the suspenseful tone and cut t silent as Trinity shots him in the head and as he falls again this is in slow motion and as he hits the floor it cuts back to real time of him morf back to relieve the dead pilot at the end of the encounter.
Band of Brothers https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=5 M 60 Eu 1 U 8 ls The Mood at the beginning of the clip is very light hearted will all of the men talk to one another the pace is slow as there relaxing and going about their business until the door bursts open and the pace and the mood changes to fast and serious well they are trying to stabilise the wounded man and theres a sudden rush of activity taking place. What I noticed overall about Band of Brothers is that there is none or very little non-diegetic sound which work very well with this being a war film because it feel more real and takes the audience there without reminding them there not there it save there immersion from being broken making it a better experience in some ways. It became calm again in the part where someone is typewriting a report of what happen to him and then he relives the moment of walking through the mission and it became very tense and the pace slows down and in general it is a lot more quite as they go along the grass when they heard shot there is a quick rush down to the floor and dialogue between the soldiers before one of them ones to scout ahead quiltily and then reports back and as they all get up you can hear all the metallic equipment clang and it transfers over to the typewriter having a quick drink from his flask before continuing and returning to the event itself as they rush over the road in to cover again the pace picks up a little as the risk of being spotted make it more tense. they get down into cover again and make a plan the dialogue is quick and quiet and as they spilt up in to groups to prepare an ambush they get within hearing distance of the enemy and theres a cut to show the emotions of the typewriter before he get into the action as they set up targets the pace slows down to a stop to build tension and the only thing you can hear is heavy breathing and the germans talking before he takes the first shot and the action begins the mood and pace and tone change at this moment to become more fitting of an action film however the lack of music and only ambience sound with the occasional few words of diology make it tence as they retreat you can see a rain of bullet over them and general chaos of explosion behind them and it ends with they typewriter finishing the report and the sound of bullet rings in his ears showing the effects it had on him.
The Walking Dead S 5 E 15 https: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=p. V 9 R 1_K 1 BJg The pace is fast during Rick and Pete’s fight scenes and the music reflect the mood as the situation escalates as the fight goes outside build in tension as the audience wonder what going to happen to them over a commercial break. After the break theres a cut to Sasha in the guard tower watching the residence run toward the commotion after hearing the window smash that it slow builds back from the silents to the fight again as the both wrestle each other on the ground and pinning each other down to the floor the rest of the world are drowned out and slowed down as they both at turn try to strangle each other until the fight interrupted by Jessie and Carl once until Deanna bring them back to order as Rick is about to choke out Pete he lets go after giving him a warning and pulls out a gun on the other residences that were walking over to him. At this put the tone over the speech he gives is building a lot of tension it shows rick in a bad light making him seem unpredictable and out of control to the reset of the spectators. as he keeps control over everyone. Jurning his speech there are cutaways where he carries on talking through a narration as Sasha in the tower defence them and backs out the points that he making. He only loses control after being knocked out and there is a long silence to give the audience time to reflect on what just happened before the end credits play and they can start to try and guess what is gonna happen next time. Without the complete soundtrack this wouldn't work in the same way it did and it wouldn't have the same effect on the audience. image: http: //static. guim. co. uk/sys-images/Guardian/Pix/pictures/2015/3/23/1427120416680/5 e 9 e 14 d 0 -6 dcb-4281 -b 9 e 53 c 41 c 6 ebae 25 -540 x 324. jpeg
