ATP: Energy for the Cell • Energy is needed for all the cell’s processes including cellular respiration and photosynthesis. • ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the organic compound that transfers energy within the cell. • ATP consists of a nitrogen base (adenine), a sugar (ribose) and three phosphate groups

ADP • To release the energy from ATP, the bonds between the phosphate groups must be broken. • When this occurs, only two phosphate groups are left creating ADP (adenosine diphosphate) • ADP can then be recombined with a phosphate to make ATP again.

ATP-ADP Cycle • The continuous breaking and recombining of phosphate groups is called the ATP-ADP Cycle. • ATP is like a rechargeable battery, because it can be used over again. • ATP is the high-energy form like a charged battery. • ADP is the low-energy form like a used battery.

Anaerobic Respiration • A process that does NOT require oxygen is called anaerobic respiration. • Includes two processes, glycolysis and fermentation • Only 2 ATP molecules are produced through anaerobic respiration

Lactic Acid Fermentation • Lactic Acid fermentation- process in which an enzyme converts pyruvic acid into lactic acid • Used to manufacture foods like yogurt and cheese • Also occurs in your muscles during strenuous exercise like running

Alcohol Fermentation • Alcohol fermentation- process in which singlecelled organisms convert pyruvic acid into ethyl alcohol • Used to produce wine, beer and bread as well
