AN OPENING PROCEDURE Beginning the day 1 Explain
AN OPENING PROCEDURE “Beginning the day” 1) Explain State the procedure: “Today on our first day of school, we are going to spend a portion of our class time learning several classroom procedures. Our first procedure is how to begin the day. ” Generate rationale: “This beginning the day procedure and the others that we use benefits all of us because it establishes a pattern for some of our general classroom tasks and activities; allowing our class to operate smoothly and consistently. ” Explain and model the procedure: Once you arrive at school and have finished your breakfast, line up in the hallway outside our classroom door. You may use this time to quietly socialize with your fellow classmates. Do not move about; no horseplay. Five minutes before the tardy bell rings I will open the door and welcome each of you back to a new day of discovery and learning. Next you will enter the room politely; turn in any homework by placing it in the basket on my desk; put away your backpack, lunch, and coat; and then sit at your desk quietly and read alone or do before school work silently. Check for understanding: (Why do we do this? ) Check to see if students understand the procedure and the rationale.
AN OPENING PROCEDURE “Beginning the day” 2) Rehearse Practice the procedure: This should be age appropriate. Give specific feedback (Individually, small group, whole class): As appropriate. 3) Reinforce: Reteach, practice, and reinforce: “You are coming into class in a more organized way today after our practice yesterday. It certainly gives us more class time this way. ” Be sure to point out ways to improve if needed.
A CLOSING PROCEDURE “Ending the day” 1) Explain State the procedure: “Our final procedure that we will learn today is how we are going to end each class session. ” Generate rationale: “This ending the day procedure, similar in reasoning as the others we use, benefits all of us by establishing a pattern of classroom tasks and activities; allowing our class to operate smoothly and consistently. ” Explain and model the procedure: At the sound of the bell, close your books and stop working. Ensure that you have copied down any homework assignments. Clean off your desk, and gather your belongings. Pick up any trash around your desk, and collect your mail. Next, stack your chair, line up, and wait quietly to be dismissed. Exit the room in a quiet and orderly manner. Check for understanding: (Why do we do this? ) Check to see if students understand the procedure and the rationale.
