What is poetry?
Poetry “The art of poetry is simply the art of electrifying language with extraordinary meaning. ” -Lascelles Abercrombie
Why study poetry? * Provides greater awareness * Deepens and broadens understanding * Offers emotional and intellectual fulfillment
Poetry Depicts Experience! * Beautiful or ugly * Strange or common * Noble or not *Actual or Imaginary

Tone * What is the overall feeling the poet wants the reader to feel? * Does the voice shift or change in the poem?
Mood * What is the emotional atmosphere? * How is the mood established? * Does the mood shift or change throughout the poem?
Form * How are the lines or words in the poem organized or structured?
Diction * Diction: the specific words that are used * How does the use of certain words affect the meaning of the poem?
Syntax * Syntax: how the words are constructed into phrases and/or sentences * Is the poem written in sentences or not? How does this impact the poem? * How does the punctuation affect the poem?
Rhyme and Rhythm * Where does the rhyming occur? Inside the lines? At the end of the lines? * Is the rhythm regular or irregular? How does it affect the poem?
Imagery * Imagery: creating a picture in the reader’s mind through the use of descriptive words and phrases * Does the poem use similes, metaphors, personification, or any other literary devices? * Is the poem literal (visual) or abstract (conceptual)?
Symbolism * Symbolism: an object that represents another person, place, thing, idea, feeling, etc. * Are there any intended symbols?
