AMRI ACCESSIBLE MRI Team Raimo Sepponen Ilkka Laakso

AMRI - ACCESSIBLE MRI Team: Raimo Sepponen, Ilkka Laakso, Simo Särkkä, Anouar Belahcen, Matti Linnavuo Members of Steering Group: Director Jarmo Ruohonen, Philips Medical, Dos Nina Lundbom, HUS Radiology

There Is a Need for Common Acute and Semi-Acute Conditions Brain infarction Hemorrhage Concussions Inflammation Sinusitis Pneumonia Abscesses Ascites Bone fractures Muscle injuries Compartment syndrome Rhabdomyolysis Discriminative Safe Tool Accessible for Diagnosis and Evaluation Changes in Water/Proton relationships

Solution: Point of Care Magnetic Resonance Imaging Benefits of modern technology: • Discrimination: High sensitivity for free water Safety: Low magnetic field-no missile effects- no patient screening • Low power: Permanent magnet technology • Lightweight: Low field, advanced magnetic construction • Easy to site: e. g. Self-shielded system on a van base_mobile AMRI • Low investment and running costs Service • Connectivity to cloud based services Proven diagnostic efficiency: • Premarket Approval (PMA) given by FDA (USA)

Brain concussion Hemorrhage DR Jan Sääf, Karolinska Institutet Tech. Sgt. Lachaunda Burley, 436 th Medical Support Squadron Diagnostic Imaging flight chief, Dover Air Base : “If you don’t have [diagnostic imaging], you’re pretty much just guessing what’s wrong with your patient. ”

AMRI - ACCESSIBLE MRI Ideal for lightweight and agile mobile MRI units

The potential markets Customers • Health care – Emergency basic medical care • Military battlefield squadrons • Catastrophe aid – Rapid Response Units There are 67 nightly operated acute clinics and about 300 day acute clinics in Finland. In the Nordic countries the number is about 1500. It may be estimated that within 5 - 7 years after the introduction, 200 - 500 clinics have acquired the product which is priced 50 – 70 k€. The market of Nordic countries will then be 10 - 35 M€ within 5 – 7 years.

Competition Customers: Health care, military and catastrophe aid organizations There are not any direct competitors Emergency CT, MRI and US-services are available especially at higher level of hospitals and emergency clinics Both CT and High Field MRI have inherent safety risks Current MRI and CT units are rather demanding to set on a mobile platform and rather impossible to take in areas of catastrophes or active military sites +++++ ++ +++++ +++++ +++++ ++ +++++

The current state of the project Work done: • Specifications have been determined with health care professionals • A preliminary technology and competitor survey is done • A laboratory magnet is available for further development • The electronics modules are designed and major components specified • A network of technology and healthcare professionals is established

Project The three main goals of the AMRI project are: • Proof of Relevance to be used in the financing negotiations • Proof of Concept and Reference Sites to be used in the marketing of the product • Customer Value assessment for reimbursement application AMRI main steps are: • Finalizing the novelty and competitor investigations • Study of the business and financing models • Developing a Proof of Relevance • Finalizing the Customer Value assessment • Evaluation work to get the Proof of Concept The measures of AMRI are: • 21 months (1. 4. 2017 … 31. 12. 2018), comprising 29 person months • Total budget 730 000 €, Tekes support of 511 000 €.

Background material and the current state of IPR The background material belongs to Aalto University The current state of IPR: • The basic solutions are based on known technology and on expired IPR of various parties. One invention report has been filed • Two invention reports will be filed related to the imaging method and self-shielded installation • Not yet conducted: Preliminary examination of novelty (novelty search), patentability searches and Freedom-tooperate (FTO)
