Amnesty International is concerned only with the protection of human rights in each case, not supporting either the ideology of the government or the beliefs of the victims.

The History In 1961 a British lawyer Peter Benenson read a newspaper report of 2 Portuguese students who were sentenced to 7 years in prison for raising their glasses in a toast to freedom. He wrote an article titled “The Forgotten Prisoners” in which he called for the people to protest against imprisoning people for their political or religious beliefs. Thousands of people responded, sending letters with support, offers of help and more examples of ‘prisoners of conscience’. Within 6 months, a permanent international movement developed and the organization Amnesty International was born.
