Digital Preservation Of National Cultural Heritage in TUNISIA Challenge and solution: CAMM 2
PLAN The challenge The Obsolescence of analogue ( format , support). The Higher cost of restauration, migration , emulation, and long term conservation. The solution in the digital era The adaptation of standards for long term conservation. The using of appropriate metadata 3
After a several years of research in many institutions in my country, The sound archive of the Arabic and Mediterranean Music Center have the oldest and the largest data, that dates back 100 years ago, and it is thanks to technological advances that the world has known it through big data. This allows us to preserve our musical heritage (essentially the Malouf). We are talking about a large amount of data to be stored, processed and protected throughout their life cycles, following the recommendations of the UNESCO Presist program and OAIS in order to: 4
q Facilitate research, cataloging, and classification. (ISO 23081). q Avoid redundancy and inconsistency of the data processed. q Simplify data migration procedures while guaranteeing their authenticity and traceability ISO 15489. q Ensuring the sustainable preservation of digital sound archives. q The preservation of unsecured access to information (ISO 27001). q Preserving copyrights and intellectual property. 5
Because of the variety, volume, value, velocity, veracity and speed of data coming from such diverse sources, they must be secured and processed quickly and protected in real time. 6
The challenge Certainly the reading supports are becoming more and more scarce and specifically the head needles reads from 78 or 80 RPM discs (Gramophone), in addition to that the Analog data presents technical difficulties, on the one hand, because the analog signal is difficult to reproduce, which leads to the loss of the signal quality, on the other hand. Moreover, it represents a high cost of storage as well as the cost of processing, either by preservation or long-term preservation and sometimes even the media and formats have become obsolete and even access to the document itself is very limited and Only for those specialists who are not entitled to the public. 7
As opposed to digital documents that have an easy-to -reproduce signal and can only reproduce copies of identical documents to the moose, thus reducing the cost and increasing The capacity for storage, digitization, preservation and restoration is the digital era (binary coding). Digital audiovisual technologies have taken an important step through the web, through the production of five important criteria, volume (byte), variety, speed, velocity, and veracity, which generates a big data context. 8
Nowadays, there is a wide variety of websites accessible at any time by the general public, but there are few websites that follow international standards in terms of storage, format, indexing and security, and although Is a simple click to access audiovisual content on smart TV, Smartphone or tablet, all these platforms are managed by an entire orchestra (producers and TV directors, computer scientists and archivists) and whose first essential phase is the choice Of the inputs, (input) which will determine the final quality of the archives to be retained. 9
The Solution in the digital era Adaptation of open archives information system ( OAIS ) 10
The inputs: The Center for Arabic and Mediterranean Music closes many of the sound recordings that are almost in the 31, 000 musical recordings as well as the oldest national music heritage, and which dates from the year 1903. The inputs come from : ØDonations from personnel or institutions archives. ØBuying and sometimes it cost very expensive. ØThe transfer of the archives from public institutions. Exp: higher institute of music 11
Data management: The first step and the most essential for the sound data to ensure a good indexation following an exhaustive inventory. 12
Preservation planning: restoration procedures are performed after the restoration step. The indexation in the case of media degradation followed by the capture step of the analogue migration data (format factory) the compression (hand break) and the emulation to be elaborated for the sound document to ensure a long-term preservation while guaranteeing their sustainability. 13
The Emulation/migration Emulation/ migration DISC Vhs Tape Materials PLATINE DISC / SOUND CARD VHS Player Tape recorder Hardware MAGIX AUDIO CLEANIC Instant DVD Recorder Audacity Software USB acquisition module 14
Storage: one of the most essential steps and the follow-up of storage procedures for longterm conservation: the under floor space of 120 m for the old supports all respecting the procedures of temperature and humidity. 15
The procedures of temperature and humidity 16
The Platform : the Telemeta The output: While OAIS model conservation monitoring is very important, the ease of searching, cataloging, accessing information and classifying are critical to the description of access and security Of the content through the use technical, descriptive metadata (Dublin core). The development of 3 copies one master is the other two in wave format (44. 1 k. Hz/ 16 bits) with a separate geographic location. 17
The Dublin Core 18
Identity and Access Management: Controlling access to archive content is of major importance in terms of the sensitivity of the underlying data. The management of federated identities is an effective solution because of the ubiquity of access to archives. 19
Data protection: with the administrative metadata The protection of archived data in terms of confidentiality, integrity and authentication requires the use of electronic encryption and signature mechanisms that must be taken into account when designing the architecture, Can be secured by backups and, more precisely, a Raid 6 disk system with a storage capacity of 1. 8 petabytes, which allows to distribute the data and to avoid their losses as well as to ensure their availability 20
The Access Is with a login and a password 21
The site also presents a limited number of videos(a short extract ) for certain music events ( concert ) on format (mpeg 4 / h 264) 48 k. Hz 16 bits following the recommendations of descriptive metadata (Dublin core, pb core) and ISO 16363. 22
The functions that characterize these websites also encourage an investigation of the conformity of their implementation with current standards, as well as the legal frameworks governing the management of archives in order to avoid piracy and non-respect of copyright Since there as many websites today. 23
In this respect, the good practices of an archiving system integrating the Big Data functionality and the protection of archives deserve special attention. Thus, a framework composed of technical architecture, standards, legal framework and good practice must be implemented. In order to preserve heritage for and share it for future generations for the adaptation of major big data projects like (the pharos project, the persist program of UNESCO). 24
