AMERICAN LITERATURE SYLLABUS
FOCUS • Curriculum for 11 th grade English must cover American Literature, thus units of study follow a chronological base highlighting Puritanism, Rationalism, Romanticism, Transcendentalism, Realism, Modernism, Racism, and Feminism. • Each unit integrates the Common Core Standards for grades 11 and 12. These standards strengthen the analysis and application of Reading, Writing, Language Conventions, and Listening and Speaking.
UNITS OF STUDY
MULTI-MEDIA PROJECTS • While the major emphasis of this course is genre writing (ie. Argumentative, Expository, Narrative and Rhetorical Analysis), projects utilizing media will be used to provide opportunities for collaboration, enhanced presentations and synthesized application of course content/skills.
Tutoring /Academic Intervention • Tutoring will be available after school (in the Olguin Library), two days a week (Monday/Thursday from 3: 15 -5: 15). During this time students may receive help on writing assignments or make up missing class work for credit. It also provides a supportive environment where students can work on Homework and receive assistance from both their peers and myself. I also use this time as an intervention to work with students whose grades are in danger of falling below a C average.
COMMUNICATION • I am a firm believer that communication is essential to being successful. Whether it’s communicating difficulties via email, or addressing concerns over the phone I try to make myself readily available. I also believe in transparency and bringing everyone in on the process by posting agendas, handouts, and grades online at the website. If you have any suggestions, ideas, or insights about a project, website, or educational opportunity for the students, please let me know.
