Essence of the 2 nd Commandment • Prohibits the manufacture of a tangible and visible image as an object for worship • Outlaws every sort of idolatry in any form whatsoever

Psalm 115: 8 a Those who make them [idols] will be like them…

Romans 1: 22 -24 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

Romans 1: 22 -24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.

Ancient Idolatry Was… • Polytheistic—many gods • Humanistic—person centered • Occultic—associated with demons
