Social Networking – What is it? • Virtual Space which allows people to: – Promote themselves (profile) – Connect to others (friends) • - Share ideas or resources - Collaborate Started with Facebook and My. Space – People connect (or reconnect) with friends – Share information through the wall • Professional sites include Linked. Why Use Social Networks? • Extend current activities to virtual space – Augments face-to-face • Removes limitations of Geography and Time – Allows the community to tap into more of its members • Sharing of information is more efficient – Better than email • Entire conversation • Latest version of documents • Leverages synergy of group to create bigger/better ideas • Allows users to control the level of interaction American Chemical Society 3
What Can a Division Do on a Social Network? • Committees and Task Forces – Private groups to allow discussions and document sharing – Pre- and post-meeting work • Meetings – Use group page to highlight agenda and provide other information in single place – Discussions before and after meeting about content and logistics – Promote special events American Chemical Society 4

Tube – A social tool to share videos – Commenting and sharing available • Twitter – A social tool based on microblogging (140 characters) via mobile phone texting – Available online or via RSS feeds – Integration with ACS Network in future American Chemical Society 8
