Cancellation of 2018 CERM in Toledo Section ACS Brenda Snyder 2018 Chair, Toledo Section, ACS 210 University Blvd. Toledo, Ohio 43614 January 28, 2018 Central Region Steering Committee Dan Mc. Loughlin Roger Parker Mark Benvenuto Dear Central Region Steering Committee, It is with deep regret and a heavy heart that I must inform you that the Toledo Local Section Executive Committee has voted unanimously to cancel the 2018 Central Regional Meeting that was to be held in Toledo, Ohio, in June 2018. Last week the Executive Committee of the Toledo Section held its first meeting since February 2017 during which the topic of CERM 2018 was discussed at length. The decision to cancel CERM was based on the following information: No venue or hotel has been secured. No contracts have been signed. This was confirmed with ACS Meetings & Expositions. No program planning has been done other than the Education track under Edith Kippenhan. No expo has been planned. No vendors have been signed. No additional funds were solicited, via IPG Grant or other ACS sources. No Divisional support has been requested. No industry donations have been requested. No Graduate programing has been done. No undergraduate planning beyond the initial discussion has been done. A call for papers was posted at the ACS MAPS site but no notice has gone out in C&EN News. The call opened on Jan 8, 2018 and, as of Jan 22, 2018, only two papers had been submitted. One Keynote Speaker was planned. The award winner from the Columbus/Dayton section, I believe. American Chemical Society 13 Lastly, the General Chair for CERM 2018, Jim Zubricky, resigned in January 2018 (see attached).
Cancellation of 2018 CERM in Toledo Section ACS A critical component of this issue is the fact that one individual, Jim Zubricky, was the Toledo Section Chair-Elect in 2016, Toledo Section Chair in 2017 (Chair Elect 2017 was vacant) and General Chair for CERM 2018. It seems apparent that Jim had difficulty managing all of those responsibilities simultaneously and did not solicit assistance from others on the EC, even when inquiries were made. While Jim states in his resignation letter that he is willing to help behind the scenes the fact is there is nothing to help with. The newly elected 2018 officers sought information from others on the CERM planning committee and found, to our regret, that planning had not advanced significantly since the last CERM 2018 planning meeting in June 2017. It was determined that it would not be feasible for us to continue with the expectation of organizing an acceptable meeting. We therefore decided that the only course of action was to cancel CERM 2018. $4000 was received from the CERM Steering Committee but none of the money has been spent. $4000 was also received from the Toledo Section. We feel the $4000 from the Central Regional section should be returned. The $4000 that was received from the Toledo Section should be returned as well. My status as both Chair of the section and Treasurer is a conflict of interest, per National ACS, so I will find someone to be CERM Treasurer until the account is closed. We request that we be allowed to retain our logo in case someone ever wants to revisit hosting CERM in Toledo in the future. We await your comments and decisions on how we should proceed with the return of the monies in the CERM account and informing the Local Sections and members of this very unfortunate outcome. We appreciate the support you have provided and hope that we can continue to work together in the future. Sincerely, Brenda Snyder 2018 Chair, Toledo Section 210 University Blvd. Toledo, OH 43614 American Chemical Society 419. 944. 3884 14

2018 Award Banquet Update • April 1 deadline for submissions only 4 weeks away • No nomination for any level educators, Diversity, Science Volunteer, Achievement and Promotion of the Chemical Sciences (which, at this point, the awards committee asks for nomination suggestions from the board as this nominee is approved by the executive committee). Contacted the “Diversity people” at Dow and they are soliciting nominations for the Diversity award. • Nominations received for Service to ACS and Outstanding Technician. High school nominations coming in. Diana will take a day at the end of March to personally visit those schools who have not participated (Ithaca, MLS, etc…. ) • No university nominations yet American Chemical Society 27
2018 Award Banquet Update — Continued • Have the 50 -, 60, 70 -year recipient list and certificates been received by the chair, secretary, or treasurer? • Reminder: nominations are only kept for 3 years • The speaker from MSU has not returned any of my emails after initial contact. Committee will seek an alternate speaker. • Venue is booked, meal selection made • No “pre-event” festivities have yet been planned (such as the poster session or demos done in the past). Requests will be made in the following weeks. • A photographer is still needed • Need to put the button on the website for Awards Banquet ($16) – who is the contact for doing this?
