Why did America enter WWII? WWII began in 1939. n America entered the war after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. n
Why did Japan attack America? Japan wanted oil in the Pacific Ocean. n Wanted islands in the Pacific. n Japan had to get rid of America’s ships in the Pacific to get oil & islands. n
America after Pearl Harbor Japan=US enemy n Japanese people in America were feared to be spies. n Americans sent many Japanese Americans to relocation camps. n
The sides of World War II Axis Powers = Japan, Germany, Italy n Allied Powers = America, England, France n WWII was fought in Europe and the Pacific. n
Hitler and Nazi Germany Hitler hated Jews. n Sent people to concentration camps to die. n Hitler wanted Germany to take over the world. n
The War in Europe n n Stalin wanted second front immediately British preferred to attack “soft underbelly” (N. Africa & Italy) Russians deserve most of the credit for winning the war in Europe Battle of Stalingrad (Sept. 1942 - Jan. 1943)= turning point in Europe

Back on the Home front First Germany and Italy surrendered. n Japan surrendered after atomic bombs were dropped. n Americans celebrated V-E and V-J Day. n
