At first, immigrants came primarily from Western Europe. Then, many started coming from Eastern Europe. Many Asians came during the construction of the railroad. Now, the primary source of immigration is Latin America and Asia. What are some of the dangers of immigration that we have worried about from time to time. Claims are that immigrants will cost citizens jobs, they bring crime, they bring disease, they won’t learn English, they will be an economic burden, etc. President Johnson eliminated limits on non-European immigrants. Asians are the fastest growing group. Latin America is the largest source of immigrants. With the fall of communism, immigration from Eastern Europe has continued. Most are hardworking people who enrich our culture. Many Americans resent undocumented workers (those that come without legal permission). The attacks on 9 -11 increased concerns about who was in our country. President Bush proposed an expanded “guest worker” program so that willing workers could be matched with employers who need workers. Summarize “A Changing Population” Population has become more religiously diverse.
