REVIEW • World War I was started because countries had a lot of nationalism, militarism, and imperialism. • World War I happened in Europe and Africa and was between the Allied Powers (Britain, France, Russia) vs. the Central Powers (Germany, Italy, Austria Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire). • World War I was really deadly because of trench warfare and the new weapons.

The Zimmerman Telegram • In January of 1917, British translators decoded a telegram from German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmermann to the German Ambassador in Mexico. • The Telegraph asked Mexico to join the German cause and invade the US. In return Mexico would regain the territories of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. • This outraged the American citizens, and they demanded the US go to war with Germany
