Platt Amendment n n US forces Cuba to include the Platt Amendment in their constitution, making Cuba a protectorate of the US. A protectorate is a country whose affairs are partially controlled by a stronger power
Philippine-American War In February 1899, Filipinos revolted against the U. S. The U. S. takes on the same role as Spain, and tries to put down the rebellion. n The rebellion lasts 3 years and about 200, 000 people die from disease, malnutrition, and guerilla tactics such as burning villages. n
Philippine-American War In response to the rebels’ guerrilla tactics, the US put many Filipinos in camps under poor living conditions. n The Philippines became an independent republic in 1946. n
Open Door Policy John Hay issued these policy statements in 1899 to the imperialist nations proposing that the nations share their trading rights in China with the U. S. n This meant that no single nation could have a monopoly on trade with China. n The other powers reluctantly accepted this policy. n
Panama Canal In 1901, President Mc. Kinley was assassinated, and Theodore Roosevelt was sworn in as President. n Roosevelt and many other Americans felt that the US needed a canal through Central America. n
Panama Canal n The canal would reduce travel time for commercial and military ships between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
The US decided to build the canal in Panama, a province of Columbia.
Panama Canal -The US supported a rebellion and Panama declared its independence and signed a treaty with the US to build the Panama Canal.
Panama Canal The Panama Canal was a great engineering feat, but workers faced many challenges. n The fought diseases, difficult terrains, and soft volcanic soil. n More than 5, 600 workers died from accidents or disease n The total cost to the US was $380 million and the canal was completed in 1914. n
Roosevelt Corollary Roosevelt wanted to prevent European powers from intervening in Latin America so that the US could remain the dominant power in the region. n Roosevelt reminded European powers of the Monroe Doctrine, and added the Roosevelt Corollary to President Monroe’s original policy. n
“Speak softly and carry a big stick”
n The Roosevelt Corollary warned that the US would use force to protect its economic interests in Latin America.
