Validation & Empathy Statements Most students are not looking for advice or problem-solving (unless they specifically ask for it). More often they are seeking validation. Validation is the recognition and acceptance of another person’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors as understandable

Reflection with Validations Repeating back the same phrasing used by the student and acknowledging the feeling that was identified Reflection Statement: “So you’re frustrate because sometimes school work is lame” Frustration is a powerful feeling Validation w/Empathy Statement: “I know from my school experience that schoolwork can be very frustrating. I imagine that the frustration must be taking a lot of your energy. ”

Demonstrate Empathy Through Validation Using language to demonstrate empathy (but not sympathy) to the student’s feelings Reflection Statement: “I hear what you are saying. You are feeling misunderstood and that no one listens to you. ” Validation w/Empathy Statement: “I get frustrated when I feel that people aren’t listening to me. Your voice is very important and valuable. ”
