Education programme: our objectives • Raise the ambition for nursing and midwifery, for the benefit of people, families and communities • Maximise the quality and safety of nursing and midwifery education and training • Ensure that regulation is fit for purpose, and not a barrier to individual and service development

Structure of the new standards

Education and training standards These standards apply to all parts of the register and all routes to registration. They provide the means to assure us that the student can meet the relevant standards of proficiency by undertaking an approved programme

Essential considerations • Need for effective partnerships between AEIs and practice learning partners • Actively involve inter disciplinary colleagues • Understand introduce new roles • What supervision and assessment model will work in your practice learning environments? • Who will be your supervisors and assessors? • How will they be prepared for their role?

New QA framework 2018 • Gateway approach to approval • More emphasis on partnerships and QA of practice learning • Effective practice learning and allocation • Supervision of students and assessment of students and confirmation of progression and proficiency

The new draft future midwife standards

The future midwife: Informed by evidence, key lessons and policy • Existing and new evidence • Changing demographics and population health • Lessons from key reports • National policy in four countries

Public consultation (12 weeks) 12 February – 9 May 2019 Four versions of online survey: § Midwives § Women/service users § Other health and social care professionals § Easy read § Events organised across the four countries - for face-to-face input and discussion § Twitter chats and webinars - open to all

Consultation findings Wide support for the review and for change Barriers- finance, access, student support (94% orgs / 91% individuals agreed) Use different approaches for individual circumstances (85% orgs / 90% individuals agreed) Programmes: agreement on ‘mixed cohort’ (69% orgs / 76% individuals) more flexibility and ‘tailoring’ To. C: yes for revalidation & overseas but not for Ft. P Self declaration: ‘split’ and concerns for Ft. P

Our new Rt. P standards • Provide a 3 month extension for those who can fulfil revalidation but fall short of practice hours • Offer a registration test as an alternative to completion of an Rt. P programme • Include new Standards for Rt. P programmes (approvals can commence from May 2019)

New Rt. P standards timeline: • Reviewed between 2016 -18 • Approved by NMC Council 27 March 2019 • Publication of new standards May 2019 • Planned transitional period with communication and support • Current Rt. P standards to be withdrawn from Sept 2020

SPQ and SCPHN • We commissioned an independent evaluation of our current standards (Blake Stephenson) • The evaluation completed in early 2019 • Paper to Council Seminar in April • Engagement with nurses, midwives, SCPHN and SPQs in early Summer

Public confidence in the care by nurses and midwives Vital considerations • Preparation for significant change • Partnerships between universities and practice placement providers • Practice learning opportunities to meet proficiencies – what could be improved and different? • Practice supervision and assessment – new approaches to agree and implement
