Introduction This presentation is going to be about the Amazon rainforest and the problems major deforestation is causing and how it is endangering the ecosystem and animals. Not only does it damage the animals but it also damages the tribes and their cultures. After this I hope you see the problems with major deforestations and try your best to make a difference.
Facts The Amazon is the world’s largest tropical rainforest. Covering over 5. 5 million square kilometres, it’s so big that the UK and Ireland would fit into it 17 times! • The Amazon is found in South America, spanning across Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana. • Running through the north of the rainforest is the Amazon river. Flowing a length of around 6, 400 km, it is the second longest river in the world. The longest is the river Nile, stretching an even longer 6, 650 km! • The Amazon has an incredibly rich ecosystem – there around 40, 000 plant species, 1, 300 bird species, 3, 000 types of fish, 430 mammals and a whopping 2. 5 million different insects. •
Statistics • More than 150 acres of rainforest are lost every minute of every day and 78 million acres will be lost per year. • 25% of prescription drugs come from 10% of known rainforest plants. Whilst only an estimated 5 -25% of different plants have been found. And a lot of the plants are found to be cancer-fighting. • 50% of the earths species are found in the amazon rainforest.
