Alvin ISD Book Bus • Reading is a Great Foundation • SUMMER PROGRAM • During the summer of 2016, the Alvin ISD Book Bus visited 14 neighborhoods (on a rotating weekly schedule) that feed into the Alvin Title I schools. At the end of six weeks, over 2, 000 students and their parents had visited the Book Bus, checked out over 2, 500 books, and took home 2, 000 free books. • Relationships with the parents and community were strengthened and the support within the district and community brought together many varied departments working together for a common cause.
Alvin ISD Book Bus • Reading is a Great Foundation • Plans for the Future? • In the Fall of 2017, the Book Bus will be used as a mobile classroom for the READy Program. The Book Bus will bring the READy Program to neighborhoods with young children (ages 3 & 4) to work directly with parents on pre-reading skills and reading readiness. A READy facilitator will demonstrate ways parents can help their children develop these skills and will provide them with supplies and resources to use at home with their children. The READy Program will target parents of preschoolers from each high school feeder pattern (MHS, SCHS, AHS). • For the summer of 2017, the Book Bus schedule will be expanded to include 21 neighborhoods. • We will partner with the Nutrition Department to offer free meals to students and family members (up to 18 years old) who visit the Book Bus locations.
