Grade Level Classification ► Freshman students are those with less than 6. 0 credits regardless of year of entry ► Sophomores are those students with less than 12 credits who are at least in their second year of high school ► Juniors are those students with less than 19 credits who are at least in their 3 rd year of high school ► Graduating Juniors are those students who are short of having enough credits to be classified as a senior at the beginning of their 4 th year. Whenever these students gain 19 or more credits, they will have their grade level changed to 12 -SENIOR. ► Seniors are those students with 19 or more credits who are at least in their 4 th year of high school

Grade Level Classification ► Grade level classification for the upcoming school year is made at the beginning of each school year including progress made during summer school. ► Classification is important because it determines how many students are in the top 10% of each class. Top 10% is officially declared in the ranking of students at the end of their junior year. ► Students may repeat a grade level based on the number of credits, but cannot be advanced a grade level beyond their cohort. The exception to this is for students who have completed an early graduation plan contract. Those who have approved contracts will be designated as seniors once they have completed 19 credits and are on track to complete their 26 credit plan before the end of the school year.

So what else are colleges looking for? ► Colleges look at … ► What courses are offered on our campus ► What courses did your student take ► How well did your student do in his/her chosen courses ► What is the level of investment in campus and community activities including volunteer service hours ► How is your student going to contribute or enhance their campus environment

Class Rank - Why are GPA and Class Rank important? Public colleges within the state of Texas (except University of Texas) offer guaranteed admittance to any student who graduates in the top 10% of their class. ► ► In accordance with Texas Education Code (TEC), § 51. 803, a student is eligible for automatic admission to a college or university as an undergraduate student if the applicant earned a grade point average in the top 10 percent of the student's high school graduating class, or the top 6 percent for admission to the University of Texas at Austin, and the applicant: ► successfully completed the requirements for the Distinguished Achievement Program (DAP) ► satisfied ACT's College Readiness Benchmarks on the ACT assessment or earned on the SAT assessment a score of at least 1, 500 out of 2, 400 or the equivalent. In accordance with Title 19 Texas Administrative Code (TAC), § 5. 5(e), high school rank for students seeking automatic admission to a general academic teaching institution on the basis of class rank is determined and reported as follows. ► Class rank shall be based on the end of the 11 th grade, middle of the 12 th grade, or at high school graduation, whichever is most recent at the application deadline. ► The top 10 percent of a high school class shall not contain more than 10 percent of the total class size. ► The student's rank shall be reported by the applicant's high school or school district as a specific number out of a specific number total class size. ► Class rank shall be determined by the school or school district from which the student graduated or is expected to graduate.

Grade Point Average & Rank Announcement ► GPA and class rank will be calculated at: ► 10 th grade - end of year ► 11 th grade – after 1 st semester and end of year ► 12 th grade – after 1 st semester and after 3 rd 9 weeks ► Parents & students will have access to GPA and rank in Skyward.

GPA Calculation ► Hand calculation is tedious but not impossible ► Assign the grade points using the grade scale in the previous slide for each semester grade ► Add up all the scaled points ► Divide by the number of semester classes

Recovering Credit – Failing Grades ► If a student fails a course with a 60 -69, they may recover credit through a credit recovery exam. After the final semester grade has been posted, the student can visit their counselor to receive an order for a credit recovery exam. The student is then eligible to complete the review and take the exam. A grade of 70 or higher recovers credit. ► If a student fails with a 59 or below, they can visit their counselor to receive an order for online credit recovery. The student is then given a logon to begin work in any place with a device and internet service. Students are required to take all quizzes and tests within this program on campus, but they can complete all other work from home. ► Credit by exam and online credit recovery are not approved by NCAA and not recommended for student’s with college sports in their future. ► Another option for credit recovery is to repeat in the course face to face setting. This is approved for college bound athletes.

Recovering Credit - Attendance ► Texas law requires students be in attendance for 90% of the time the course is offered. Even if a student passes the course with a 70 or better, the student can be denied credit if he/she was not present for 90% of the time. ► AHS is offering credit recovery for loss of credit due to attendance through successful completion of an attendance contract. ► Students who have lost such credit will need to visit with our attendance contract specialist, Ms. Stephanie Brown, in B 105. She will review their attendance and provide them with a contract of specified time to recover their missing credit(s). ► Since loss of credit for this reason does not have any bearing on passing grades, credit recovery through contract does not have to be approved by NCAA for college sports consideration. ► If a student choses not to fulfill a contract, they will also have the option of repeating the course in a face to face setting.

How do I improve my GPA ► Course selection is key ► Our 6. 0 GPA scale allows students to receive weighted grade points for the more academically challenging courses ► Choosing from advanced courses and doing well in those courses is the best way to improve your student’s GPA ► Keep in mind a student has to earn credit in the course to benefit from the weighted grade points

Course Selection for 2020 -2021 ► The course guide for the upcoming year is being finalized now. ► Course selection for current freshmen and sophomores will start in January-February. ► Juniors will conference with their individual counselor to plan for their senior year starting in November and finishing up by Spring Break. Parents will receive a letter inviting them to attend the Jr. Conference if available before the end of October. ► Please keep in mind that the graduation requirements for certain endorsements will allow your student to graduate from high school, but they may or may not meet the requirements for your student’s chosen college/university or field of study.

Course Requests Verifications After conferences are complete, the counselors will send out course request verification sheets in late April or early May. This will be a the last chance to review your student’s course requests and make any changes without consequence. • Approval for these changes will be based on making sure your student is staying on track with chosen endorsement requirements. • The results from course request verifications are used to staff the campus needs for the upcoming year. Changes requested after this period are not guaranteed. Changes requested after the verification deadline are granted depending on availability of seats in the replacement course, course prerequisite, graduation requirements, and the ability to align replacement with your student’s endorsement plan. •

Schedule Change Policy Alvin ISD HS Schedule/Course Change Policy ► Student course selections determine how the school master schedule is built, how faculty is hired, and how room assignments are made. Your course selections are your commitments to the courses. ► After the start of school, schedule changes will only be considered based on the following circumstances: ► ► The student is a senior not yet scheduled in a class needed for graduation. ► The student has already earned credit for a course that they are currently scheduled. ► The student does not meet the prerequisite requirement for the course. ► The student was dismissed from a program in which approval must be granted. Please note: ► Submission of a change request does not guarantee approval for schedule change. Approval or denial may be based on the conditions above, student’s intended graduation plan, endorsement, and seat availability in the replacement course. Student must follow current schedule until notified that a change has been made. ► Pre-AP and AP students may petition to move from an advanced class to a regular-level class per the Pre -AP / AP contract. ► During the first couple of weeks of the semester, schedules may be changed by administration to balance class sizes as needed. ► Some schedule changes may require a change in graduation plan and/or endorsement. AP Exam Registration Two-step Process this year: 1. Students will first need to register at www. Total. Registration. net/AP/440115. This site will handle all payments and communications. 2. Students will then register using a class join code at https: //myap. collegeboard. org and sign in using their College Board login information or create an account if they do not have one. This site is used for class resources and assignments. • You may contact the College Board at 866 -315 -6068 or apstudents@info. collegeboard. org if you are having trouble signing in to your account.

Registration Deadlines and Fees August 15 -October 1, 2019 - Students must complete online registration through both Total Registration and My AP to register for desired exams. October 1, 2019 - Last Day to register for the AP exam(s). November 14, 2019 - Final day for students to register for AP exams without adding additional fees and to cancel exams. Schedule Changes ★ Students in Pre-AP/AP classes must remain in the course for the first six weeks. Students should have accessed the AP Support Plan prior to a class change. Students are responsible for all applicable fees if AP exams are canceled after Nov. 14 th. Course changes will only be made based on educational needs, per campus administration. (See AP/Pre-AP contract for the process to initiate class change) November 15, 2019 - Late Registration for AP exams begins. ($40 additional fee/exam) Exams must be canceled through My AP and Total Registration by November 14 th. March 2, 2020 - All AP exam fees must be paid in full. (Students who do not make a payment by this date, will be placed on the fines and fees list for their test fee. In addition, if the student does not take the exam, there will an additional $40 fee) SPRING Mid-January - Registration opens for students taking only 2 nd semester AP classes. EX: Government, Economics, Psychology. NO LATE FEES WILL BE CHARGED. February 13 th is the last day for Spring semester registration.
