LONG TERM CAUSES Alphonse had severe back problems due to an unfortunate accident during birth. Alphonse had an evil exploitative owner (called Frank the Camel Kilter). Frank had a nasty incident in his childhood involving a camel's hoof and his rear end. He was very bitter and had never trusted camels since. Frank regularly overloaded his camels prior to taking them on gruelling round trips up and down mountains Customers were completely indifferent to these frequent and gross violations of the rights of camels On his rare breaks Alphonse would show off how much he could carry. Camels are selfish creatures who don't trust each other. They were more worried about looking after themselves than about working together, and the trade union fizzled out. CREATED THE PROBLEM SHORT TERM Frank takes Alphonse on another grueling and totally unnecessary round trip up and down the mountains. On a whim he decided to add the bedraggled straw he had been chewing to Alphonse's load. MADE THE PROBLEM WORSE

They were frustrated by their failure to achieve this by negotiation. Harshness of the Treaty of Versailles (1919), especially towards Germany – German reparations, blamed entirely for WWI, demilitarized, land taken. The Great Depression worsened the unsolved economic problems after WWI. This made states concentrate on THEIR OWN interests instead of considering the international impact. The Great Depression weakened many new Democracies and countries turned to more extreme fascist rulers to solve their problems. Failure of the League of Nations and the diplomatic processes in dealing with Japan and Manchuria, Italy in Ethiopia, and German rearmament. Hitler’s ambitions of reversing the Treaty of Versailles and acquiring Lebensraum in Eastern Europe. Japanese invasion of Manchuria in 1931. Militants of Japan invades Manchuria in order to control the production and shipping. Expansion was seen as a way to improve conditions during the Great Depression. SHORT TERM CAUSES The rise of the Nazi Party and Hitler named chancellor in 1933 German reoccupation of the Rhineland. This was a part of Germany on the border near France that was demilitarized under the Treaty of Versailles. Formation of the Axis Alliance in 1936 – Germany allies with Japan and Italy forming a military alliance. Sino-Japanese War (1937) – Japan becomes more expansionist and invades the rest of China. British policy of Appeasement – rather than go to war and suffer devastating damages like in WWI, Britain looked to achieve peace through giving what Hitler wanted as long as it was reasonable. The Anschluss (1938) – Germany takes over Austria. Great powers do nothing. Czechoslovakia and the Munich Crisis in 1938. ‘Munich Agreement’ where Britain appeased Germany by letting them have the Sudetenland. Invasion of Poland – Germany signs Non-aggression pact with Soviet Union and both countries invade Poland. Debatable – could be both Made problem worse Most immediate cause
