Arms Race Definition: a competition between nations for superiority in the development and accumulation of weapons, esp. between the US and the former Soviet Union during the Cold War. Characteristics: Examples: America, Germany, France & Russia were both involved. Central to the cold war. Fighting for superiority, to see who has the best developments. (Weapons)
Space Race Definition: the competition between nations regarding achievements in the field of space exploration. Characteristics: Examples: The U. S and the Soviet Union were involved. There hasn’t been another time in history that had competitions over space (Competition of space exploration) exploration. But they used software, space shuttles, etc.
NATO Definition: a military alliance of European and North American democracies founded after World War II to strengthen international ties between member states—especially the United States and Europe—and to serve as a counter-balance to the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact. Characteristics: Including Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, & other nations. Examples: A-stan & Kosovo
Sputnik Definition: Sputnik 1 was the first artificial Earth satellite. It was a 58 cm diameter polished metal sphere, with four external radio antennas to broadcast radio pulses. Characteristics: Examples: The Soviet Union were the ones to launch the first artificial satellite. January 2, 1959 - Luna 1 , first man-made satellite to orbit the moon, is launched by the U. S. S. R. March 3, 1959 - Pioneer 4 , fourth U. S. -IGY space probe was launched by a Juno II rocket, and achieved an earth-moon trajectory, passing within 37, 000 miles of the moon. It then fell into a solar orbit, becoming the first U. S. sun orbiter.
Truman Doctrine Definition: President Truman's policy of providing economic and military aid to any country threatened by communism or totalitarian ideology Characteristics: Examples: U. S, Turkey, Greece, etc. Sharing your aid with other nations who don’t have any, and wouldn’t stand a chance at war.
Marshall Plan Definition: a United States program of economic aid for the reconstruction of Europe (19481952); named after George Marshall Characteristics: Examples: United States secretary of state and former Army General George Marshall & most support went to France, Britain, and Germany while the Netherlands received a huge amount. The Marshall Plan was a example of another time period; the Kennan's containment policy
Cuban Missile Crisis Definition: Cuba and the Caribbean Crisis. The former USSR — was a 13 -day confrontation in October 1962 between the Soviet Unio n and Cuba on one side and the United States on the other side. Characteristics: Examples: United Stated of America & Cuba. Fifty years after the Cuban missile crisis, began a new nuclear war, scientists and science diplomacy are playing increasingly important roles in checking the spread of nuclear weapons, experts said at a workshop co -organized by AAAS.
Bay Of Pigs Definition: The Bay of Pigs Invasion was an unsuccessful military invasion of Cuba undertaken by the CIA-sponsored paramilitary group on 17 April 1961 Characteristics: Armed forces enforced by the United States, were sent in to invade Cuba, but were soon defeated. Examples: Invading other countries, either winning or being defeated.
