What are alloys? An alloy is a mixture of at least two elements, one of which is usually a metal, that we use instead of pure elements, because the alloys can be better.
What different types of alloys are there? ● ● Pure metal: Pure metal is when there is just one type of atom Substitutional alloy: A substitutional alloy is when the added atom is almost the same size as the base metal atom, which distorts the atomic arrangement Interstitial alloy: An interstitial alloy is when smaller atoms fill the gaps between the larger atoms, making the alloy stronger against cracking Combination alloy: A combination alloy, or a substitutional/interstitial alloy, is when an alloy has both a substitutional and an interstitial structure to make it a better alloy.
Clever & Super alloys A clever alloy is an alloy that can go back to its original shape once it has been bent. Glasses can be accidentally bent without destroying them! A superalloy is an alloy that can stay the shape it was made in in really hot temperatures. This jet turbine blade can handle high temperature burning jet fuel! Clever alloy: top Superalloy: bottom
What things have alloys in them? ● ● Coins: The U. S. dime is made of 91. 67% copper and 8. 33% nickel Cutlery: Cutlery is made of the combination alloy stainless steel. Stainless steel has nickel or chromium in it to make it resistant to rusting. No one wants a rusty fork!
Alloys from the past. . . The first alloy was made 5, 000 years ago. Can you guess what it was? It was bronze! Bronze was made by melting together copper and tin. This discovery was very useful. The people used it for weapons and tools. Later, people learned how to make brass, a stronger alloy, , and started using that as well. Today we use both alloys for lots of things.
