Definition A form of communication Influences the emotions, attitudes, actions, and opinions of its audience Basically, propaganda influences whoever reads it! Controlled communication of a one-sided argument through the media Manipulative and designed to appeal to emotions, NOT intellect
Examples of Propaganda… Portrays caricatures of “enemies” to make them more frightening Give reasons to go to war
Examples… Fight for your nation Do what is right Become a hero Get the girl, admiration
Why would countries use this technique? Reaches a wide range of people through the media Shows the government in power Very influential Only promotes the “good” Keeps negative images about the country quiet
Techniques: Bandwagon Follow the crowd Others are doing it and they are fine Be on the winning side with everybody else
Techniques: Card Stacking � Only presents information that is in their favor � Takes out all information against their cause � Your baby will benefit from drinking soda in the following ways….
Techniques: Name-Calling Negative language describing an “enemy” Attempts to arouse prejudice Sarcasm, ridicule
Techniques: Glittering Generalities Use of “virtue words” Attempts to associate person or idea to positive symbols Opposite of name calling
Techniques: Transfer Link two subjects together Transfer negative (and sometimes positive) feelings from one object to another Little girl eating a rat = Kissing a smoker… GROSS!!
Techniques: Fear Disaster will occur if audience does not follow what they are told to do Teens think texting while driving isn’t a big deal, but this is what it causes…
