All compounds are molecules but not all molecules

All compounds are molecules, but not all molecules are compounds. The basic unit of matter Two or more kinds of different atoms that are bonded together Two or more kinds of atoms that are bonded together Matter that is made up of only one kind of atom

Color, smell, boiling point, melting point, infra-red spectrum, magnetic, viscosity, density, etc… Heat of combustion, reactivity with water, PH, etc…

MATTER yes MIXTURE yes Are the parts of the mixture hard to tell apart? Homogeneous Mixture (solution) no Can it be physically separated? PURE SUBSTANCE no Heterogeneous Mixture yes Can it be chemically broken down into smaller pieces? Compound Element no

MATTER yes MIXTURE yes Are the parts of the mixture hard to tell apart? Homogeneous Mixture (solution) Colloids no Can it be physically separated? PURE SUBSTANCE no Heterogeneous Mixture yes Can it be chemically broken down into smaller pieces? Compound Suspensions Element no

Pure Substances Element – composed of one kind of atom – EXAMPLE: copper wire, aluminum foil

Pure Substances Compound – composed of 2 or more atoms bonded together – properties differ from those of individual atoms – EXAMPLE: table salt (Na. Cl) Courtesy Christy Johannesson www. nisd. net/communicationsarts/pages/chem

Mixtures Combination of two or more pure substances that are not bonded together. Heterogeneous Homogeneous

Mixtures Solution – homogeneous – very small particles – particles don’t settle – EXAMPLE: rubbing alcohol

Mixtures Heterogeneous mixture – Medium to very large particles – relatively easy to separate – EXAMPLE: candy

Mixtures Colloid – heterogeneous – medium-sized particles – particles don’t settle – EXAMPLE: milk

Mixtures Suspension – heterogeneous – large and small particles – particles settle – EXAMPLE: fresh-squeezed lemonade

Practice Time… Examples: – graphite element – pepper heterogeneous mixture – sugar compound – paint heterogeneous mixture – juice homogeneous mixture (solution)

More practice… Examples: – mayonnaise – muddy water – fog – saltwater – Salad dressing colloid suspension colloid solution suspension
