ALL ABOUT TRANSFORMATIONS Ms. Kingsbury

TEKS GRADE 5 • identify and draw one or more lines of symmetry • describe the key attributes of the coordinate plane, including perpendicular number lines (axes) where the intersection (origin) of the two lines coincides with zero on each number line and the given point (0, 0); the x-coordinate, the first number in an ordered pair, indicates movement parallel to the x-axis starting at the origin; and the y-coordinate, the second number, indicates movement parallel to the y-axis starting at the origin;

TRANSFORMATION • A transformation is the change in appearance. • A shape has 4 specific ways it can be transformed - Translation - Reflection - Rotation - Dilation • You start with a pre-image and you finish with an image.

TYPES OF TRANSFORMATIONS Below are examples of transformations that maintain the same size: Resizing results in the same shape but the pre-image is a different size than the image.

TRANSLATION • Translation means the shape moves. The shape ONLY moves. It is still the normal preimage it is just in a different location.

REFLECTION • A Reflection is just like when you look in a mirror. The image is the same it’s just reflected back. • This is also known as a FLIP over a line of symmetry.

REFLECTION EXAMPLES Mirror Lines are also known as Lines of Symmetry.

ROTATION • A Rotation means turning around the center. • Any shape you rotate will make a circle around the center.

ROTATION EXAMPLE The center that the shape is rotated around might be placed inside of the shape… Or it might be placed out side of the shape. Either way the shape, when rotated, will still create a circle.
