WHAT IS POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT? • PBS is a framework for understanding people and the things they do (their behaviour). • Based on the belief that all distressed behaviour happens for a reason, and that it can be changed. Aims to: • Make environments a better fit for the young person (like school and home) • Support the young person to develop new skills • Improve ‘quality of life’ for young people and their families
WHY DO WE USE POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR SUPPORT? • Why good to use…. • Recommended by NICE and in government policies • Based on choice & equality of opportunity • Better evidence base than traditional ‘talking therapies’

HOW DO WE WORK? Two main things: • Making changes to the environment around the young person (where they are supported and the way that people support them) • Supporting the development of skills and/or coping strategies

ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES: COMMON AREAS Communication Like using less speech, using text and pictures, using technology Routines & structure Like Visual Timetables, Planners Demands Making sure they’re right for the person Quality of Life Improving access to meaningful and fun activities Environment Thinking about sensory processing
INDIVIDUAL SKILLS: COMMON AREAS • Coping skills, for example: • Anger management, • Work around feelings, • Relaxation techniques • Improving understanding of certain situations, for example: • Comic strip conversations • Behavioural experiments
