Teach Literacy to Middle School Students �Students enter middle school with diverse levels or reading. �They can have reading range from third to eighth grade. �Meeting the needs of these students is challenging to middle school teachers. �Teachers can teach strategic reading and stimulate thinking and wondering. �Teacher can offer students books they can read. �This Power. Point offers a few ideas teacher can use to promote fluency in students reading. �
Integrating Literacy Instructions What it means to Be Literate, an individual is able to: �Speak for a variety of purposes and audiences. �Listen in a variety of situations from a variety of resources. �Read various materials and texts with comprehension and critical analysis. �View, understand use non-textual visual information. �Write in clear, concise, organized language that varies in content and form for different audiences and purposes.
Many of our students come to us with different backgrounds knowledge and experiences. They speak many different languages and dialects. It is our job to ensure that hey are able to make meaning and use the information that is presented to them in printed text. There are many instructional strategies that we use to ensure reading and comprehension and content literacy. Scaffolding � Identify what students know � Begin with what students can do. � Help students to be like everyone else. � Know when its time to stop. � Help students become independent when they are working a activity. Sheltered Instructions � Use of English in the classroom with student who do note speak English. � Appropriate use of wait time. � Effective use of vocabulary that students need in all content areas to be successful.
