INTRO • The proletariat often loses ability to determine life and destiny • Proletariat-the working class or labor ing class • The possessing class- large business of property owners that control the work force also know as the wealthy

DICTION EXAMPLE #1 • "Private property represents the conservative side and the proletariat the destructive side" (Marx 59) • Karl Marx uses the word "destructive" to show that if the proletariat were to change anything, then they would worsen the situation no matter how they change it. He uses the word "conservative" to describe the wealthy. They do not want change, because they want to keep the balance between the proletariat and the wealthy classes.

DICTION EXAMPLE #2 • "To use Hegel's expression, this class is, within depravity, an indignation against this depravity, an indignation necessarily aroused in this class by the contradiction between its human nature and its life situation, which is blatant, outright, and all-embracing denial of that very nature. " (Marx 59) • Uses the word "indignation" instead of anger to show they are angry for an invalid reason: • They have a desire to destroy the wealthy and wish to change what is naturally occurring and as a result lose the ability to determine life and destiny, and lose focus of what is right.

CONNECTION TO GATSBY • He suffers from self-alienation • Gatsby was poor, but instead of complaining about it and trying to destroy the wealthy and make everyone equal, he worked for his money and became wealthy, but he did so by defying the laws which restricted him from doing so, and therefore he destroyed himself in the process.
