Algebraic Expressions and Models Notes 1. 2
Evaluating Powers
Evaluate the power.
Evaluate the power.
Rules to Live By!! Anything to the Power of 0 = 1 Anything to the first power is itself.
Order of Operations 1. Perform operations that occur within grouping symbols. (Parenthesis) 2. Evaluate powers. (exponents) 3. Perform multiplications and divisions from left to right. (multiply and divide) 4. Perform additions and subtractions from left to right. (add and subtract)
Examples 8– 3+7 – 2÷ 2+6∙ 4 4– 3
Adding a Substitution -3 + 6(y + 1) when y = 2 when w = -5
Write and evaluate a Mathematical Model Example 5 on page 11 You have $40 and are buying some DVDs that cost $12 each. Write an expression that shows how much money you have left after buying d DVDs. Evaluate the expression when d = 2 and d = 3. Original amount – price for dvd x number of DVDs bought Remember order of operations!!
Example 6 on page 11 For a trip to Mexico you need to exchange some U. S. dollars for Mexican pesos. The exchange rate is 11 pesos per dollar. You already have 110 pesos left from a previous trip. Write an expression that shows how many pesos you will have after exchanging d dollars. Evaluate the expression for d = 250. Pesos per dollar x Dollars exchanged + pesos you already have
