Note 1: Algebraic Expressions In algebra: Ø a variable (letter) is used to stand for a number Ø write letters in alphabetical order eg. pqr Ø write numbers before letters eg. 2 p
Examples: Write down as an algebraic expression Eight more than six times x 6 x + 8 Four less than twice x 2 x - 4
Note 2: Simplifying like terms Like terms can be added or subtracted, if they are the same term and of the same power. The sign (+ or -) belongs to the number or variable after it. Examples: Simplify 3 a + a – 2 a = 2 a 4 b – 7 b + 2 b = -b 7 c + 5 d – 9 c + 2 d = -2 c + 7 d 5 ef + 6 fg – 8 fe + 7 hg = -3 ef + 6 fg + 7 gh
When we add and subtract like terms with powers, we do not change the powers. Examples: Simplify k 3 – k 2 + 3 k + 4 k 3 – 6 k 2 = 5 k 3 – 7 k 2 + 3 k
